Online Ambiguity

The comedy of ambiguous language is not confined to newspaper headlines. In actual fact one of its most fertile sources is online. When the name of a company get translated into an internet address, with the words running together without the spaced, there are sometimes unforseen consequences....

This was discover by Pen Island when they ran into trouble promoting themselves as a family friendly tourist destination at Penisland.com (Penis Land)

Likewise when a new interent start up sought to provide a service for anyone wanted to find out which agent represents a particular actor or musician, they made a mistake in using their name for the url - whorepresents has another meaning entirely.

The Expert Exchange proved to be an unexpected hit with the transgender community after setting up shop at expertsexchange, and the Therapist Finder website got some very strange visitors to their site at therapistfinder (the rapist finder).

Divine Irony

A local event to celebrate the unveiling of a Childrens Noah's Ark project at a school in Poole, Dorset, had to be cancelled because of flooding - Reported in the Metro free paper 4 October 2006.

Funny Road Names

A 2005 poll sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors set out to find the funniest road names in the USA. Here are the top 3 as voted by the public:
- Psycho Path, Traverse City, Michigan
- Divorce Court, off Easy Lane, Heather Highlands, Pennsylvanian
- Farfrompoopen, Tennesee - the only road leading up to Constipation Hill

Funny Villages of Britain

We've seen some of the funny road names in the USA, but they can't compete with some of the places in Britain. I guess its just an age thing, because many British place names are based on ancient languages (Norse, Celtic, Roman etc.) or on old English words whose meanings have changes, which leaves us with many place names, particluarly in old historic villages, that now sound rather rude...

Comedy Shopping

Using puns to give your store a distinctive name and draw attention to yourself is a popular ploy. Here are a few examples from my native England:
- Vinyl Resting Place (2nd hand record shop in Croydon)
- Hair-O-Dynemix (London Hairdresser)
- Norman D Landing (Militaria)
- Wok This Way, The Frying Scotsman, Pizza the Action (Restaurants)

Aptly Named

UK Research company Experian set out to find which town in Britain had the largest number of dog owners. Perhaps unsurprisingly the town that came out top, with 11.5% of households owning a pet dog, was the town of Barking in Essex.

Eats, Shoots and Leaves

I guess you might call this bit of a classic of the genre, as well as being a bit of a crusade against poor grammar it is also a highly amusing read. I thoroughly reccomend it.
