Announcer Larry Collmus Calls Race of a Lifetime

August 22, 2010, Oceanport, New Jersey: It was a fine Sunday afternoon, the seventh race at Monmouth Park Racetrack.

Suddenly, announcer Larry Collmus had a tongue twister of a race and a chance for 15 minutes of fame as a viral video star. He did not disappoint.

The call for this horse race sounds like a famous Spike Jones skit... but it was real!

Guess which horse was trained by a woman, and which by a man.

Are These Horses For Real?

A Little More Information on the Famous Horses

In fact, they are. Two different owners, two different trainers, two different pedigrees. The horses' registered names are actually mywifeknowseverything and thewifedoesntknow. Mywifeknowseverything has a fairly tame pedigree of Najran and Rose Jade, but thewifedoesntknow has a slightly tongue-in-cheek pedigree as well: Golden Missile and aheadnotatail. (Guess which is the stud.)

Quotes:

"We like the fact that My Wife Knows Everything, or at least in this instance, knew everything!" -- mywifeknowseverything's owner Michael Giorgio

"It's the truth! That's what it comes down to. What wife doesn't know everything? I was the underdog. I had no chance to beat that one!" -- thewifedoesntknow's owner Edwin Broome

I told you it sounded like a Spike Jones routine...

"The William Tell Overture" by Spike Jones

Spike Jones was a madman who had a radio show in the forties and fifties. His orchestra's most famous piece was "The William Tell Overture," a spoof of horse racing with some of the silliest names ever.

Warning: the Spike Jones "orchestra" includes cow bells, slide whistles, antique car horns, and other office-inappropriate noises.

I have no idea who the crazy old coot is providing interpretive dance, but more power to him.

(The "race" starts at 1:00 if you want to skip the typical Spike Jones introduction.)

Hee! You may be overestimating my taste; I like some amazingly dumb flash animations. This is pretty funny, though; check it out again sometime when you're in leisure mode.
