Christmas carols are great, but sometimes "Silent Night" just doesn't fit the mood. If you want something funny and upbeat for your Christmas party, or just for listening to around the house, here are some funny Christmas songs sure to make you smile.

You can't talk about funny Christmas songs without mentioning Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. It's a Christmas classic! I'd really like to know where Randy Brooks got the idea for this irreverent song that was originally performed by Elmo and Patsy in 1979. What was he thinking, having Santa run over a poor old woman with his sleigh?! But odd as the song may be, it's become a favorite. I look forward to hearing it every year at Christmas. The song first started becoming a seasonal hit in the 1980s, and by 2000 it was turned into an animated Christmas special for children. (But in the animated version, Grandma doesn't die and Santa is innocent.)

Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas Song 

Christmas Don't Be Late

This song is as fun now as it was when Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. (a.k.a. David Seville) wrote it back in 1958. Bagdasarian actually sang the song, but the credits are given to The Chipmunks, the fictional group of three singing chipmunks named Alvin, Simon and Theodore. This was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I always loved the part where the man yelled, "ALVIN!" before they started singing. And I'm not the only one who must like that part (not to mention all the other parts). This song was an instant hit when it was released. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles chart and became The Chipmunks' first (and only) #1 single. Not bad for a trio of furry critters.

The animated Chipmunks programs came quite awhile after the Christmas song and added another way for people to enjoy the singing chipmunks. This 3-disc set includes three holiday DVDs featuring everyone's favorite furred crooners - A Chipmunk Christmas, Alvin's Thanksgiving Celebration, and Trick or Treason.

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas 

This is another classic, originally released in 1953 by 10-year-old Gayla Peevey, who actually DID receive a hippo for the holidays. According to Wikipedia, a local promoter in the girl's area picked up on the song's popularity and raised money to buy her a real hippo, which was then donated to the local zoo. The hippo lived for almost 50 years.
