While working on this lens, I was struck by how many quotes from the Peanuts comic strip and Dr. Seuss children's books are actually very relevant to living life. That may be part of the reason they have been so successful. It's because of this relevance to living that I've chose to include books on life from The Peanuts comic strip and Dr. Suess.

  • Look, I don't want to wax philosophic, but I will say that if you're alive you've got to flap your arms and legs, you've got to jump around a lot, for life is the very opposite of death, and therefore you must at very least think noisy and colorfully, or you're not alive. - Mel Brooks

  • There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass! Who's been pinching my beer? And at the other end of the bar the world is full of the other type of person, who has a broken glass, or a glass that has been carelessly knocked over (usually by one of the people calling for a larger glass) or who had no glass at all, because he was at the back of the crowd and had failed to catch the barman's eye. - Terry Pratchett, The Truth

  • Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome. - Isaac Asimov

Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz

Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz

This beautiful album is sure to please fans of Charles M. Schulz and his art. The whole gang is included - Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, Peppermint Patty, Schroeder, Pig-Pen, and all the others from the original Peanuts strips.

More than five hundred comic strips are reproduced, as well as such rare or never-before-seen items as a sketchbook from Schulz's army days in the early 1940s; his very first printed strip, Just Keep Laughing; his private scrapbook of pre-Peanuts Li'l Folks strips; developmental sketches for the first versions of Charlie Brown and the other Peanuts characters; a sketchbook from 1963; and many more materials gathered from the Schulz archives in Santa Rosa, California.

The art has been stunningly photographed in full color, capturing the subtle textures of paper, ink, and line. The strips, which were shot only from the original art or vintage newsprint, reveal how, from the 1950s through 2000, Schulz's style and the Peanuts world evolved.

This celebration of the genius of the most revered cartoonist of our time is a must for anyone who has ever come under the spell of Peanuts.

The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss

The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss

Beyond Dr. Seuss's work for children is an entirely different world--perhaps similar in whimsy and humor, but even more wondrous. The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss is a beautiful full-color coffee-table book filled with cartoons, sketches, and oil paintings.

The collection of birds, cats, lions, and pointy-headed people is fairly familiar territory for any true Seuss fan, but with a deeper amount of detail and more sophisticated tones. Including such designs as, "Impractical Marshmallow Toasting Device" which shows that Seuss didn't find art to be a serious business. And maybe the painting "Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks" is a rendition of Cat in the Hat's evil twin. A wonderful, intriguing book for Seuss fans of all ages.

The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing But the Seuss

The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing But the Seuss

A Visual Biography of Theodor Seuss Geisel
Theodor Seuss Geisel, creator of Horton the Elephant, the Grinch, the Cat in the Hat, and a madcap menagerie of the best-loved children's characters of all time, stands alone as the preeminent figure of children's literature.

But Geisel was a private man who was happier at the drawing table than he was across from any reporter or would-be biographer. Under the thoughtful scrutiny of Charles D. Cohen, Geisel's lesser known works yield valuable insights into the imaginative and creative processes of one of the 20th century's most original thinkers.

I have two that are short but sweet.

"Buy the ticket. Take the ride." -- Hunter S. Thompson

    and...

"We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -- Oscar Wilde.

My favorite on this list is probably a tossup between Thompson's and Asimov's. And of course it goes without saying that anything Woody Allen says is gold.
