The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the common, three-leaved clover. According to tradition, it is said that clovers with a fourth, extra, leaf bring good luck. There are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover.

A shamrock has three leaves, not four. In Ireland, the shamrock, a three-leafed old white clover, is said to have been used by Saint Patrick to illustrate the Christian doctrine of the Trinity when cristianising Ireland in the 6th century. The name shamrock comes from from Irish seamróg, which is the Irish word for clover (seamair). The shamrock has been used as a symbol of Ireland, since the 18th century. And, did you know that the shamrock has been registered as a trademark by the Government of Ireland?

The phrase "Luck of the Irish" is said to owe it's origin to the U.S.A.. Some trace the origin of the phrase to the US where Irish immigrants during the exploration for gold in the West, there were a high number of Irish people who got lucky, and found their "pot o' gold" in the gold fields of California, or were equally prosperous in silver mining.
