Funny Stories - Dental Checkups

"Dental Checkups" is one of many funny stories in The Misadventures of Russell Quigley, a hilarious collection of sea stories woven into the fabric of Russell's life as a Navy photographer.

Even as a Chief Petty Officer, Russell had a tallent for finding trouble and irritating people, but this time, it was his sense of humor that put him in harms way.

Dental Checkups

The Dental Department really had it together. They were actually notifying us when it was time to come in for a six-month checkup. I had never seen this at any other command. I was impressed.

My name was on the list, but since I had full dentures, I didn't think they really wanted to see me, so I gave them a call. "No, Chief Quigley, you don't have to come in."

Master Chief Langford

The following month I received a phone call from Master Chief Langford, the "A" school officer. "Chief Quigley, your name is in the dental checkup list again. There's an asterisk after your name. Apparently, you were supposed to go last month. How about taking care of this. I don't have time to baby-sit you guys."

"Master Chief, they said I didn't have to go because I have full dentures. I'll call them again."

"You do that, Quigley."

The Dental Clinic

I called. "I'm sorry, Chief Quigley. It won't happen again." But, of course, it did.

Master Chief Langford, Again

Master Chief Langford called again the next month. "Quigley, what is wrong with you? I made a simple request that you take care of your personal business on time, you screw around for three months, and it still isn't taken care of. What do I have to do, take you by the hand and go down there with you?"

"I'll take care of it immediately, Master Chief."

"See that you do."

I took care of it.

Captain Nolte

"Captain Nolte? This is Captain Strussel. I'm in charge of the Dental Clinic. I'm calling to tell you that you have one smart-ass chief in your command. I'm referring to Russell Quigley. He put his dentures in a plastic baggie and stuck them in a guardmail envelope with my name on it. I am a busy man, Captain, and I don't need that kind of crap from any of your chiefs."

"Captain Strussel, I will attend to it immediately."

He did.

A light, fast, and thoroughly enjoyable read. As a thirty year Navy Veteran I look for books about the Naval Service and Russell Quigley is one of the funniest and best books that I've found. I would certainly recommend this "misadventure" to anyone who would like to enjoy a true Navy experience. Not since Admiral Dan Gallery has anyone caught the highs and lows; ins and outs of everyday Navy life. As we say in the Navy: Well done, David Griffths, Well done.
