This is awesome! Well deserved purple star and all the trophies :) I've actually been to most of the Minnesota towns you mentioned. It's funny that you hear them so many times that you don't think of them as strange until you read an article like this!! lol

Wow, even being an Idaho native I'd never even heard of some of the names listed for here. Apparently the residents hide the names, even from other Idahoans. :D I had heard of Santa though.

Here in the Phil, there are lots of names to describe diff places such as Sampalok (Tamarind in English) because in the early times the place is full of tamarind and other places with different original names based on legend...ohh well what do you think can I write a lens about these places and their mystical, funny, and sometimes creepy legends?

The Old Philadelphia Road (RT 340) goes through Intercourse, Pennsylvania. Turn one way and it's a long drive to Blue Ball, PA, but turn the other way and it's only a short drive to Paradise, PA.

Great lens! I can certainly understand why they changed the name of the town of Naboomspruit to Mookgophong. I really like the name of the Tittycaca Indians near Lake Tittycaca. As a former truck driver I ran through a lot of towns with humorous names. And let's not forget Peckerwood, AL. Thanks for the lens.

I don't have any names to add but love the video. I make fun of them (Americans) as well in my Odds and Ends lens. It's sad that even Bush didn't have a clue who our Prime Minister was when he was elected ....I realize that their are educated Americans out there but so many of them don't seem to have a clue of anything outside their own borders .... I once joked with one about polar bears in my back yard in Nova Scotia ... figured he would know I was joking ... he didn't !!! (he asked me to send him a photo ...)

Add "Boca Raton", Florida to your rat list! It's Spanish for "rat's mouth"!

How about a few for the German speakers? There's Affendorf, Niedersachsen (Monkey Village), Kuhbier, Brandenburg (Cow Beer), Faulebutter, NRW (Rancid Butter), Poppendorf, Sachsen (roughly translates to "Bonkingtown"), Deppenhausen, Baden-WĂĽrttemberg (Idiot-ville) and in Austria...Unterstinkenbrunn (Lower Stinky Springs!)

    Love this Lens.

I once lived in a little place called 'Pity Me' in Durham (North East of England). Every single time I boarded a bus and said, 'Pity Me please,' the driver would chuckle to himself and say, 'Why, what's happened?'

It was funny at first. By the seventy-seventh time it had been said though, the novelty was wearing off.

'Gee... I've never heard that one in the year I've been living there Mr Bus Driver.'

Very nice lens - I live very close to a city with a great name. It's not as good as many of the other ones but I think it's in the ballpark - Sandwich, Illinois. There's a nice little restaurant there called Alessandria's in the golf course that serves great food so I find myself in the position of heading to Sandwich for sandwiches a couple times a month.

Love the lens, but I was a little disappointed with the names of the towns given for Washington State "Podunk." I'm a native Washingtonian, and you misrepresented our state. Puyallup is an Indian name, and don't get me started on the crazy things we have named for the true natives here. As for others, don't forget Sequim (pronounced "squim"), Twisp, Tukwilla, and my personal favorite, George. Yes, that's right. You can live in George, Washington. I do believe there is also a Martha, though she is lesser known. The small farming towns are pretty great too... Washtukna... Ritzville (which is funny if you know how UNclassy the town is)... Anyway, I loved the lens, but maybe add some better ones for Washington!

I just spent the day at Big Bone Lick State Park (in northern Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati).

It got the name because it was an ice-age salt lick where a lot of mammoth bones are found, but it is still hilarious to see the giant highway signs on I-75 giving directions to "Big Bone Lick".

    Hi Quipping Queen,
Your lens got me to thinking about the state I grew up in - Pennsylvania (although I'm now on the other side of the country.) So....I made a lens about Pennsylvania's funny names. Take a peek if you have a chance. Funny Pennsylvania Place Names ~Aquavel
PS Humptulips IS an awesome name. I found a PA name that may be just as funny: "Noodle Doosie.'" (Except the townsfolk changed it "to a name that didn't sound so silly.")
  • Aquavel Mar 5, 2009 @ 1:51 am | delete
    Hilarious 5*s!
Although I'm now on the other side of the country, I grew up in Punxsutawney, PA. ~ Pennsylvania has many goodies. There's also Blue Ball and Bird-In-Hand, PA, and they say you have to go through Intercourse, PA to get to Paradise, PA. There's also Stalker and Climax, Pennsylvania.

I really enjoyed this lens. There is a lot of humor to be found in place names. I may have missed them, but I did not see two more interesting names Bug Tussle, Alabama or Bucksnort, Tennessee. 5 Stars.

I was in my car coming back from a vacation in Idaho, and I saw a water tower with the word "ATHOL" on it. Then we passed the Athol General Store and the Athol Baptist Church. If you think Athol isn't a bad name, try saying it aloud. (ath-hol) I can just imagine...."Where are you from?" "Athol." "Excuse me?" Haha! Great article though!

Fabulous lens. If I could give you ten *'s I would. Sorry, *****'s will have to do. I'll toss in a fave, too. Thanks for such an entertaining lens.

Great lens! 5 stars, favored and linked to Wardsboro 4th of July.

I loved reading your interview with Gil. Thank you for all the helpful hints.

I grew up on the edge of Podunk, Vt. which is a suburb of Wardsboro. With Wardsboro's population just over 650, the population of Podunk must be just over 0. Podunk, Vt. was mentioned in the Washington Post recently and you can find references to it on my Wardsboro 4th of July Lens!

Nice lens. Got to give you 5 ***** for all the funny place names. You could continue with the rest of the world, like the numerous odd names in Wales, or Puddletown and Piddletrenthide in Dorset, England, but then the blog might just turn into a 200 page epic LOL. Great job.

You know, if you grow up in an area with funny names, you don't think of them as funny until you say the name out loud to an out-of-towner. For example, growing up in Massachusetts, on the way back home from Boston, we used to go for ice cream at the corner store in Assinippi. Okay, I get it now. Go to Assinippi and get some ice cream. Hah Hah.

um...I live in Jollyville, Texas now. How am I to interpret that?

LOL. What a cute lens. I enjoyed that. There is a place in the mountains called Busthead. I don't think it's a mailing address though. I asked my mom why it was called that. She said it was because of the mountain road and people running off and busting their heads and other stuff.

You can make an entire person with some towns in Massachusetts. Start with Peabody, then Marblehead, add Braintree, and then Athol (spoken with a lisp!).
  • Greekgeek May 8, 2007 @ 6:13 am | delete
I'm sorry, I forgot. Here are a few more I used to see on the drive between Boston and Philadelphia:

    Throg's Neck
    Pawtucket
    Woonsocket

and then there was the exit sign on 276 (I think) that said:

    NYACK
    SO NYACK

I would love a photo of that, if anyone lives around there. I think it was in NY.
