Cool And Easy Science Experiments You Can Do At Home
I can remember as a kid I was always fascinated by science. In fact, if I was given a penny for everytime I asked "why?" I would be a rich man. Not to mention my mother would have less gray hair. Sorry Mom. I still remember the first science kit that I was given on Christmas. I was entertained for hours by the simplest fun experiments with science. However, it is possible to do many fun science experiments with household items only! These experiments are easy and great fun for kids.
As I was doing the research for this lens, I couldn't help but try out each experiment to see how well they worked. I hope you have as much fun as I did. Don't forget to let me know what you think and if you have any other science experiments to do at home, feel free to share them!

Egg In A Bottle
For This Fun Science Experiment You Will Need:
-Glass Bottle (with a neck slightly smaller than the egg)
-Matches/lighter
-Small Piece of Newspaper
First you need to take the shell off of your boiled egg. Then light the piece of newspaper on fire and place it inside of the glass bottle. Place the egg on top of the glass bottle and wait to see what happens! Note *The fire will go out, this is supposed to happen*
Why Did That Happen!
The flame heated the air molecules inside the bottle and caused the molecules to move away from each other. Some of the air molecules escape from the bottle because the egg acts like a one way valve (air goes out, can't come in). When the flame goes out, the air molecules cool and come closer together. However, since some of the air molecules left the bottle and can't get back in past the egg, the pressure inside of the bottle drops. With the pressure outside the bottle greater than inside of the bottle, the air outside forces the egg into the bottle!

Crushing A Can With Air
For This Fun Science Experiment You Will Need:
-saucepan
-kitchen tongs
-water
First you need to fill the saucepan with cold water. Then put 2-3 tablespoons of water in the aluminum can. Heat the can until the water inside boils (will see vapor cloud when it starts to boil). Let the water boil for about 30 seconds. Grab the can WITH the kitchen tongs and quickly place it UPSIDE DOWN in the pan of water. Voila!
Collapsing Soda Can (Rapid Condensation in a Closed System)
Mr D demonstrates the collapsing can: 2-3 Tablespoons of water are boiled in a can and then the can is quickly inverted into cold water. The steam rapidly condenses and produces a semi-vacuum. Atmospheric pressure does the rest! View the collapse frame-by-frame for best results. Thanks for camera work, Anna!

Why Did This Happen!
The water vapor created from heating the can pushed air out of the can. When the can is inverted and placed into the cold water, the water vapor in the can condenses quickly. Like the egg in the bottle experiment, the pressure in the can decreases quickly. The outside pressure is much higher than inside which causes the can to collapse!

Soda Fountain
For This Fun Science Experiment You Will Need:
-Mentos Candy
This experiment is well known thanks to the Mythbusters. This experiment should be done outside! Things may get a little messy. First, take the top off of the 2 liter bottle of soda. Now drop in a mentos and get out of the way. For better results, stack a few mentos in a paper column and drop them all into the bottle.

Why Did That Happen!
The Mythbusters video above explains this very well and in more detail. The concept is pretty simple. The mentos and soda react and produce carbon dioxide gas. The gas then escapes out the top of the bottle creating an amazing soda fountain.
Vinegar and Baking Soda Balloon
For This Fun Science Experiment You Will Need:
-Vinegar
-Baking Soda
-Plastic Bottle
-Funnel
There are many different experiments that can be done with vinegar and baking soda. Exploding bags and bottle rockets may seem cooler, but i am going to try to keep things safe. First, put about 3/4 cup of vinegar in the plastic bottle. Fill the balloon with the baking soda. Now place the lip of the balloon over the mouth of the bottle without dumping any baking soda into the bottle. Once secure on the bottle, tip the balloon up so the baking soda falls into the bottle and stand back.
Why Did That Happen!
This experiment utilizes an acid-base reaction. Mixing the vinegar(acid) and baking soda(base) causes a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide gas. Since gas needs more room than either solids or liquids, it fills the balloon. This same concept is used for the exploding bags and bottles. Do those at your own risk.

Water Screen
For This Fun Science Experiment You Will Need:
-Rubber Band
-Mesh Screen
-Index Card/Piece of Cardboard
-Water
Some people think this is a trick when they first see it. I promise you, it is science hard at work. You should do this experiment over a sink untill you get it down. First, place the mesh screen over the top of the glass jar and secure it with the rubber band. Fill the jar as full as you can get it! Now place the index card on top of the screen and flip the jar over, holding the water inside. Make sure you are holding the jar vertically. Now slowly remove the index card. There you have it! Tilt the jar slightly and the water rushes back out.

Why Did That Happen!
This experiment uses the concept of cohesion and adhesion. Cohesion is the attraction of molecules that are the same to each other. Surface tension allows the water molecules to form a membrane. As a result water stays in the bottle even after the index card has been removed. The water molecules are bound together to form a thin membrane between the screen openings. When you tip the bottle it breaks the surface tension and the water comes gushing out.
Want More Cool And Easy Science Experiments?
Science can be addicting. Once I started doing some of these experiments I could stop searching the internet for more fun science experiments to do. There are countless experiments that can be done without having to buy an expensive kit. I came across an ebook that had a few of these experiments and many more.
