Fun Team Building Activities

Ranked #21,414 in Business & Work, #389,286 overall

For a lot of people, the term "team building" sounds pretty dirty, like cooperation and friendship are being forcibly rammed down their throats. Team building workshops, while a necessity, tend to meet some resistance as well, because people see them as insincere ways of building harmonious working relationships among colleagues. As unpleasant as the prospect of team building seminars can be to some people, there's still no doubt that they are highly necessary to allow people to work well together.

Most times, team building workshops take the form of discussions and seminars, but these can become fun activities as well, and people don't need to get stuck inside stuffy conference rooms. You can become a stronger, more united team by doing activities outdoors too. It's a refreshing new venue and everyone can feel free to let loose and have fun.

Why have fun, outdoor team building exercises?

They say you can't learn everything inside the classroom, and at some point, you'll have to learn the practical side of thing first hand. It's the same with team building workshops. Learning more about the concept of team building, the qualities of a strong team, and how a good team operates is all well and good inside a conference room, but after that, you need to be able to know how to apply what you just learned. Taking part in exciting team building activities is one way to gauge if you've learned everything and if you can apply your newfound knowledge to other aspects, and not just work.

Team Building Activities

There are many great outdoor team building activities your group can engage in. Here are just a few examples.

Paintball. This has a lot of potential for fun and laughter, and also gives you an opportunity to work with your teammates, strategizing to effectively target the opposing team.
Go karting. Go karting is usually done individually, but for team building purposes, you can join up with other team members and join timed relay races against other teams.
Scavenger hunt. This can take place all over town or within the workshop area. Gather and decipher clues with your teammates and work together to overcome obstacles to find the item you'll be looking for.

You can also try building a raft using materials available at hand, solving puzzles together, and perhaps even teaming up to take part in a cooking contest.

Think these activities are too far removed from a corporate setting? Don't be so sure. These can teach you conflict resolution, creative brainstorming, better communication, and problem-solving skills, among many other qualities. The best part is you're getting to know your colleagues in a more relaxed environment.
