furminator for dogs

Love the dog, hate the shedding?

My family and I have always loved Golden Retrievers, except for that one thing:

Shedding!

Hair all over your clothes, hair all over the house, hair in your salad... well, you get the picture.

So when I heard about a grooming brush called a FURminator, I wondered if it could be as good as they said. Removed up to 90% of shed hair? Really? 'Brush' it out with the FURminator instead of sweeping it up?

This lens describes one of my favourite dog grooming tools - the FURminator. It really does remove loose hair in enormous amounts, and keeps your dog's coat looking smooth, shiny and healthy.

What is the FURminator?

It's a special brush

Experts call the FURminator a de-shedding tool.

I call it a brush.

I guess it's a bit of both: looks like a brush, acts like a tool. You simply run it through your dog's hair. It has a stainless-steel strip on it with very tiny teeth. These teeth grab the loose under hair on your dog's coat without pulling or cutting. Before you know it, you have a HUGE pile of hair.

Choose the right FURminator for your dog

There's a FURminator perfect for your dog's size & coat

It is important to choose the right FURminator model for your needs, based on:

  • animal size
  • coat length

Toy, small, medium & large dog
Long or short hair

Plus there are FURminator models for cats, kittens and rabbits too!

Is the FURminator good for all dogs?

No - don't use on non-shedding dogs

FURminator is designed to remove the undercoat of dogs who shed.

Not all dogs shed, because not all dogs have that undercoat or double-coat. Some dogs have a single coat - hair rather than fur - and the FURminator's action will actually break the top (and only) layer of hair, giving your dog a frizzed-out look.

no furminatorDogs have two types of coats:
  • double coat - or "fur"
  • single coat - or "hair"

Both types of coats either:
  • shed, or
  • do not shed.

It's really important that you don't use a deshedding tool on a non-shedding dog breed. Here are the non-shedding breeds:

SINGLE COAT, non shedding dogs:
  • Maltese
  • Poodle
  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Coton De Tulear
  • Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier
  • Kerry Blue Terrier
  • Portuguese Water Dog

DOUBLE COAT, non-shedding dogs:
  • Shih Tzu
  • Lhasa Apso
  • Bichon Frise
  • Schnauzer
  • Havanese
  • West Highland White Terrier

Why groom your dog?

Good for your dog and good for you

Removing shed hair that's under your dog's topcoat helps stimulate a shiny, thick coat; it's a great way to remove dander too; a nice brushing can be a great bonding time for you and your dog ... and LESS SWIFFERING for you!

Anyone in your household who suffers from allergies will benefit from the dog being groomed - less dander to stimulate sniffles!

Some tips for grooming your dog:

  1. Start at the head and work down to the tail

  2. Be careful around the ears - this hair seems to get extra tangled

  3. Don't use a Furminator on a tangled coat; instead take a washcloth and soak it with dog conditioner. Rub over the tangles and gently comb out. Or use a 'rake' style comb (super spaced teeth) to gently work out the knots first.

  4. Always brush in the direction of the coat; never the opposite direction.

  5. Go gently on the soft underbelly -- sensitive zone!

  6. The rear is another sensitive area; test out your dog before brushing and combing too vigorously in the hindquarters.

  7. It goes without saying - be extremely careful around the base of the tail near the anus and around your dog's genitals.

Cats, rabbits and even ferrets!

Using a FURminator on your pet rabbit or ferret isn't just a matter of good grooming ... both these species frequently groom themselves, and in the process, they swallow hair. They can't expel this hair, so by removing the loose hair that they would normally swallow, you help prevent potentially life-threatening hairballs from developing.

Rabbits physically can't vomit - and if they ingest too much hair, or don't have a high-fiber diet, they can develop "hairball" or "wool block" problems leading to very serious impacted stomach or intestines.

Like rabbits, ferrets also groom constantly and also cannot vomit.

Ferrets change their coats to get ready for seasonal changes. The winter coat is shed out to make way for a thinner, summer coat. The summer coat will shed out in fall to make way for the thicker, winter coat. All this extra hair, when ingested, creates life-threatening problems just like the rabbit. Besides good grooming, you can try cat hairball laxative pastes to prevent or reduce hairballs.
