antique furniture restoration in Cornwall

Hi, My name is Ian Marshall, and I am by trade an antique furniture restorer. I live in Lostwithiel, which is a small town in cornwall. I have been restoring furniture for the past 30 years and although most antique furniture restoration comes from Devon and Cornwall, I am able to collect items from anywhere in the UK. My company name is  Cornwall Furniture Restoration

Work is regularly carried out for private customers, the trade and for insurance companies. Fire and flood damaged furniture is also playing an increasing part in my workload. If you have any enquiries regarding furniture restoration I am happy to discuss with you on the telephone. Digital images sent by email are also another handy way of showing me the damaged items. I can of course be contacted by phone on 01208 871444. I have featured some items below to give you some idea of what we do and how we do it.

Updating our Blog

Just added some more restored items to my Riverside Restorations

Simplicity is sometimes the best

1950s oak desk

This oak desk came into the workshop looking rather drab. The oak was a dull grey colour and the leather interior needed replacing . After carrying out neccessary repairs which included changing the hinges ,releathering and mending a bad split, the whole piece was stripped and then repolished usibng shellac white polish. The desk was then cut back with wire wool and waxed to give a pleasant honey colour with a satin sheen. my week

10 th March 2011. it has been an unusual week. Mainly consisting of restoration to an early nineteenth century mahogany bow fronted chest of drawers and an antique rosewood card table. Also sorting out the locking mechanism of a late nineteenth century mahogany filing cabinet. Have updated my website to include restoration to a pair of inlaid chairs

Carved Oak Sideboard

Some of the better furniture doesnt neccessarily have to be antique. This 20th century oak sideboard is both pleasing in style and proportion. Previously damaged in a flood the sideboard has been completely stripped and repolished. The back was also replaced

French polishing a mahogany drop leaf table

The mahogany table after repolishing and waxing

This reproduction mahogany table had received some bad marks on the top. The surface had also mottled and it was neccessary to completely strip and repolish the item. Modern finishes are tough compared to the usual finish on antique furniture. Restoration was kept to a minimum. The item was stripped, grainfilled and finally polished and waxed. For more info on french polishing please visit our main website page Riverside Antiques

George III mahogany secretaire bookcase

This secretaire bookcase is dated around 1790. Many of the astragal glazed panes at the top were cracked. The bookcase had been stored in a very damp outhouse and much of the veneer had started to lift

Georgian mahogany chest of drawers circa 1780

This paricularly good proportioned bachelors chest suffered from water damage after the property it lived in was flooded. The chest had to be completely stripped and repolished after any loose joints were glued and missing veneers were replaced. I particularly liked the colour and size of this chest of drawers as well as the original handles.

Restoring a pair of country chairs

This pair of fruitwood chairs had sustained a lot of damage after having been stored in a barn for several year. After gluing up all the loose joints the chairs had to be treated for worm. They were then cleaned back and finally polished and waxed
