Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden Characters and Story Plot

Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden is the prequel to the popular manga series Fushigi Yuugi, the Mysterious Play. The story begins in the northern part of Japan in a small village called Morioka. The year is 1923.

Genbu Kaiden revolves around a young girl named Takiko Okuda. Takiko lives with her mother, her grandmother and her father, who is rarely at home.

Takiko cares for her ill mother who is dying from Tuberculosis. She is not very well liked at school and in fact, has very few friends at all. Her only true friend is man named Takao Osugi. He is an old friend of her father.

Unexpectedly, Takiko's father returns home. He is terribly exhausted from his long journey, but almost immediately after returning home, he starts working on the translation of a book that is written in another language. It's called the Shijintenchisho; The Book of the Universe of the Four Gods.

Takiko does not like her father very much because in her opinion, he has never seemed to care about his family. After returning from a meal one evening she is told that her mother died. Even more than her mother's death, she's pained by her father's lack of reaction.
