Your Comments & Suggestions On Future Jobs

In case you want to contribute outside the debate.

From the lens The Best Jobs For The Future.

Your ideas on jobs of the future would be appreciated.

It may be hard to see beyond the increased regulations of dying bureaucracies, but individual initiative will propel new life as the throes end. The greatest service would be if you know of jobs that are currently shunned, but will still be in demand within a pluralistic, less regulated, more connected society.

The one thing we know is that major change is coming, those that are not adaptable will become the new lower class, or disappear. What humans normally expect is a nice continuation of the past. That seldom occurs - far more likely is a major disruption that will redefine our lives; again. Life is not linear.

"In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists." - Eric Hoffer

Got some fun reading your stuff... Nice job... In my opinion we have 2 ways for the future: a) or we become experts in something or b) we die trying...
Anyways, the poor studies will soon be forgoten... people are evolving... the world is evolving...

After losing my traditional teaching job, I started listening to Dan Miller's podcasts and reading his books. I did what you suggest - I created my own job. Now I am a private tutor with more flexible hours and the ability to meet people of all different persuasions. I may go back to teaching next year, but I now know that no matter what, I can create a job for myself. Future - and current - jobs are ones we create ourselves and then strive hard to do well.

I also believe that the world of work is changing in very fundamental ways. Internet has been the primary driver of this. There are huge opportunities for people who are willing to take a little risk and make something happen. There also some dangers. I believe that many people are not prepared for this type of life. What happens when the masses lose faith in the old institutions (colleges, big business, etc) to provide them with security without the ability to go it alone?

I have to say i find the idea of a major upheaval of our society to be reassuring. Right now, nothing works and its like a game of Jenga with so many holes in the structure that it is bound to topple over soon.
Government run education flat out does not work. Children are not learning and teachers are treated like second class citizens. In california its an absolute disaster, kids are graduating from high school with 4.0's and they forget everything they learned (aka memorized) within a month.
I would love to see this entire system done away with, give people back the tax money they pay for the education system and let people pay for a privatized new form of education.
  • aesta1 Apr 26, 2010 @ 9:18 pm | delete
The change has been going on and sad to say, many educational insitutions have lagged far behind. However, new insitutions of learning have come up, in corporations, in communities, online and individualized distance ways not possible only a few years back. What is great is you can now easily earn a degree at the same time learn different skills to ensure your employability. What a time to be in.
  • Mahogany Apr 3, 2010 @ 7:34 am | delete
I definitely see the pros of working towards a degree (certain fields DEMAND a set of checks and balances, for public safety - like engineering, medicine - and a degree is a stepping stone for proof of ability). Still though, I agree whole-heartedly that, these days, a degree is more a self-marketing tool and, the structure/systems in today's educational institutions tend to, yeah, often be counterproductive to actual learning. Great lens Allan! 5*

In my point of view college degree is always important to get the job and better designation with in organization or company. It always gives you priority to grab the opportunity..i am right or not? I have dome my MBA Degree from european management institute in 2009 and now i am working as executive in a marketing company in India.
  • Renee Sep 2, 2010 @ 6:00 pm | delete
I agree with this except for the fact that most kids who go straight into college don't know what they want to do and just pick whatever major sounds best. most don't even work in the field they have a degree in. Lawyers, doctors, psychiatrists, social workers, Marine Biologists, CEO's these people need the degrees, but most other college majors don't teach you anything specific to any of the other thousand possible careers out there.
all of the communications and sociology majors and people who get any degree without a specific career in mind, these people would be better served spending their college years testing out different career options, picking one and then getting the education needed for that career.

  • HorseAndPony Dec 30, 2009 @ 8:18 pm | delete
Great lens. I believe there will always be jobs available in science and technology. Do you need a degree for these jobs? I do not think so. There are so many people who work high tech jobs that did not study the exact material in collage. It is possible to learn what you need on the job and it happens everyday. I could not participate in the debate - Will college degrees be more or less important in the future? I am a maybe. You must first change the mindset of many people who still look down upon the lesser university, let alone a lack of college education. Will that ever happen? Maybe, if the economy and job situation remains the same. People might start thinking a little differently if they want to do more than just survive.
  • AndyPo Dec 27, 2009 @ 6:29 am | delete
Excellent article. Very interesting and thought provoking. For some continuous learning will be a possibility and modern technology really helps us pursue our dreams (we can even now get published and read by thousands at the click of a button) for many I suspect, the old style, "wage slave" jobs will persist.
  • lasertek Nov 26, 2009 @ 7:42 pm | delete
I've always believed that people can succeed if they love what they are doing; that goes as well with the jobs that will be pursued. So with the changing times, I guess it's time to reevaluate oneself and jot down the things that you would like to do in order to get the fitting job.

Hope you get to visit my lenses. Thanks

Very nice lens, 5***** When I started my career Computing was the way to go, but now this has no security and the wages are not good either. Right now I would advise anyone to look for a job with the Police or any of the services, or in the Medical field, where there is always demand.

I have no college degree, although I did attend the Defense Language Institute. While I would have loved the opportunity to go to college, I think I would have been impatient having to learn all the freshman basic courses before getting to learn what I was passionate about. At DLI, you delved right in to the language, and I loved that. I'm not sure how I would have done in college. I would be so anxious to study what I loved that I might have been one of those college drop-outs. Maybe it is a lack of discipline on my part, maybe impatience, or maybe I would have hung in there. I just know that there are people I have come across in life who have a college degree and hate their jobs, but feel stuck because they don't want to "waste their degree".

I'm an Oracle Database Administrator, and I can tell you that people are always looking for DBA's. This includes Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, Teradata, and DB2. Really good DBA's are not in great abundance, and companies usually want them to have at least 5 - 10 years of experience. It's a hard field to get into, due to the high work load demands, 24/7 availability requirement, and mistakes made on the job must be non-existent or to a minimum due to the damage that can be done. Definitely considered the "Doctors" of the IT industry, they are responsible for all of the data stored for a corporation, and ensuring that it is accessible whenever it is needed. This data is highly valuable to companies, and can be worth billions of dollars!

I believe that the hot jobs of the future will be in the following:
    1) Healthcare - Obviously. Baby boomers, bad health, craziness
    2) Engineering - Such a good field to get into. The race is on to find new sources of energy and the technology that can harness these new sources. One must be good at math for this kind of work though, so that excludes me.
    3) Computers & Science - Put these two together and you are the bomb. Computational Biology and Genetics are only a few of the fields one can enter with education in these two difficult subjects. Genetics sounds cool doesnt it? Think Spiderman...
    4) Teaching - People young and old need to learn. Someone has to teach them! Teachers dont get paid fabulously and this fact may turn some people off from this respectable line of work (like me), but if you want to become a teacher, go for it!
    5) Actuary - This job is so math intensive that it is disgusting. The workers in this field are smart and paid.
  • SideSplitters Sep 10, 2008 @ 9:16 pm | delete
Great work! I've thought this for a long time: it's rare that you find someone who goes to college to learn, most go to become highly specialized. If you think about it, it's designed that way and the business world encourages it. The highest paying jobs out there are for those that are the most specialized, not the most intelligent.
