What is a G-Rated Love?

A G-Rated love starts with the girl next door and an under-age smoker. Tammy and Melissa would sit on the brick mailboxes just across the street from my parents winter home in Arizona smoking cigarettes. Tammy was 21 but Melissa was 13 going on thirty, her parents were older and her stepdad just was tired of trying to rein her in. So she smoked, snuck out late at night and it is a real miracle she didn't become pregnant in her teens.
*
Now Tammy was a nice girl that had recently moved in with her family at the end of the street, literally next door to my parents home where I was staying. She and Melissa would be blazing away on the cigarettes and I would come over only to hear about all of their past boyfriends. Not exactly what I had hoped to talk to Tammy about, being incredibly shy though left me to listen and listen and listen some more.
**
If it wasn't for her younger brother Mark I would have never went out with Tammy.

Too Shy for Even a G-Rated Love

So Tammy and her brothers Mike and Mark and her older sister(3 years older) DeeDee were all out front of my parents house, the music was blaring some 98 KUPD(Cupid) rock songs and we were all just hanging out. There really wasn't much else to the story here just a bunch of teenagers and 20 somethings hanging out. I think Mark and Mike must have been talking about girls and dating with me when Mark asked me if I had a girlfriend? "Nope." Any prospects? "Well I have been wanting to ask your sister Tammy out but she is always talking about other old boyfriends." Mark isn't known for skirting issues, it took him all of 30 seconds to tell his sister that it was bull poop that she kept talking about boys especially when Mike(me) wanted to go out with her.
*
Tammy stomped over my way and wondered if this was true? "Yeah" I said sheepishly. "Well all you had to do was ask." she said.

Don't Open the Door

From Chevy Truck ForumWell without a lot of stammering and stepping on my tongue I managed to arrange a date with Tammy. We went to the drive-in movie theater the Glendale 9 just south of Bethany Home Road on 55th Avenue, the theater is still there one of two remaining in Phoenix.
*
I had a black Chevy Scottsdale 3/4 ton pickup that we went to the drive-in in. On the way we stopped for some junk food, drinks and smokes at Circle K. I believe the movie was National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation(1989) which would be the right year. Tammy was on the passenger side and I was behind the steering wheel. Years later she recalls how I was sitting so close to the door that if someone would have opened the door I would have tumbled out, I was that close to the door. There was a second movie but neither of us recall because....

Talk About a Boring Date

Tammy barely stayed awake for the first movie and by the second she had fallen asleep and I was taking her home. She woke up as I was pulling in the driveway. I think she gave me a little peck and apologized for falling asleep. She was working at Smitty's Food Market and she would get up at 3:30 A.M. to get ready than go to work an hour later. It's no wonder she was falling asleep by 10:00 P.M.

Enjoyed your love story. Being shy makes relationships kinda hard at times.

Is that you playing and singing, Wayne?

No, I may have 'an ear for music' but it's never played anything... I got kicked out of choir in 9th grade because someone saw me smoking.

Breaking Up Gets Easier the More...

Tammy and I managed many more dates and I figured she was "the one" then she broke up with me. Then she made up with me, then she broke up with me again. Then she made up with me. Then she broke up with me again. She heard I had a date, well something about that didn't set well with her so she made up with me. Then I(yes I) broke up with her... or at least I tried. She did this fainting thing and fell limp in my arms. I don't know but something about it made me actually start loving her. You probably assume I had loved her all along but I think it was more just wanting to spend my time with a girl.

The "Face of Love" Album

Tammy and I went out for almost a year before we decided to get married, well we were engaged for 4 months before we got married. Marriage is a big commitment, the daily give and take can sometimes wear you down but we both had Christian backgrounds. That gave us a little to build on, and build is what we did. We were married for 17 years before our little boy showed up, he brought us even closer together.
*
I was listening to a caller on Family Life radio tell what made his marriage successful, "When you argue with your wife and you are right, shut up and let them have the last word. When you argue with your wife and they are right, shut up. Period."
