What can the G1 Google Phone do?

Ranked #5,269 in Computers & Electronics, #108,384 overall

It's 2012 and last year I sold my G1 for more than I paid for it!

The T-Mobile G1 (also called the HTC Dream) was the first cell phone to use the Android operating system! I loved it, but technology has advanced... I bought it for a penny (plus contract extension) and sold it for $89! I upgraded to the T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G. I am one happy camper!

I leave this webpage up to tell you about how much I enjoyed the HTC G1..... This will likely be my last update to this page... The HTC G1 may be the right phone for you - or you may be just curious about this phone as it may someday be a collectible!

-------- Previous Intro -------
I've had it for over three years and I wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a newer Android when the time comes).... It's running well and I'm using it every day to read email, search the web, play games like chess and Angry Birds, scan barcodes, take pictures and video, keep my calendar up to date, and more. It's not new technology anylonger, but it's still so much fun!

The G1 Google Phone can do

GPS, Wi-Fi, Music Player, 3.2 MP Camera, Web browser.... and much more! Below are some of the less advertised features...

Sample Picture, Taken with the T-mobile G1 Google Phone

withe gPhone Camera :)

The phone really does pretty well for a camera phone. I do find that I have to hold it steady for a few seconds for it to focus (while pushing down the button halfway) and then a few more seconds after I fully press the button.. If I press the shutter button and then move right away, the picture will be all blurry and wrong.. It did take a couple of tries to get the hang of.. All in all, a pretty handy 3.2 megapixel camera!

Use the Google Phone as a Barcode Scanner!

Read Secret Messages

The Barcode Scanner program (available at the Android Market) uses the camera to scan and interpret barcodes. In addition to regular product barcodes, it will read 2D barcodes called QR codes. These barcodes can have contact information, links, map locations, plain text, and more in them.

You can use this website to create a QR barcode!

ShopSavvy Program shows lowest online price, reviews, and more

Just scan a barcode with your phone, or type in the title or barcode... and then voila! A few seconds later this is what you get!

Quick Ebay Search (even Completed Auctions!)

using the Pkt Auctions ebay application from the android market

This program allows me to do very fast searches on Ebay! It will even search completed auctions without having to sign-in. As you can see in the picture, it downloads 30 results at a time and even displays the gallery picture!

The "Price Check" feature lists the maximum, median, and minimum prices, too. This program also has a "My Ebay" section, which displays items being watched and also items you bid on, etc... You can even make a bid!

Quick Amazon Search

Although it is very possible to view the regular amazon website on this G1 Android phone, sometimes you might want a quick way to search amazon. The program Amazon Droid does this elegantly.

Multiple Browser Windows

something I long desired has finally come true!

I am the queen of multitasking! On my home computer, I often have over 10 tabs open! The Android browser makes viewing regular websites very easy, and as you can see, you can easily switch between different browser windows. Added bonus: it will save your password!

Voice Recognition on the G1 Android Google Phone

Now the G1 has built in Voice Search! It works really well, as you can see in this video... There is also a program called QuickSearch for the G1 which will recognize your voice and then you can use that program to search Google, Yahoo, Ebay, Amazon, Facebook, My Space, Flickr, etc.....
