The Outlander Series

The author  Diana Gabaldon first came to my notice a few years ago. I consider myself lucky because I had the first five Outlander books to read one after the other ... otherwise the suspense would have killed me!  Upon reading them I was expecting a historical romance but what I read was a complex interwoven tale of such magnitude that I feel I know the characters personally. From the beautiful Scottish Highlands to the splender of the French Court. From the battlefield of Culloden to the American Revolution. The Outlander books construct a special place in your heart for the characters and atmosphere of the 18th century.

There are seven Outlander books - Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes and the newest instalment An Echo In The Bone which continues the amazing story of Jamie and Claire Fraser, their family and their friends..

In addition to this Diana has written a set of "spinoff" books depicting the life of Lord John Grey a secondary character in the Outlander series. The most recent of which The Scottish Prisoner was released on the 29th November 2011.

And last but definitely not least: The book fans have all been waiting eagerly for, the elusive book eight, has officially been given the title WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART'S BLOOD and will hopefully be on the shelves late 2012 or early 2013! Yes it seems a very long time away but it'll pass .... eventually!

Synopsis of Outlander

It is very difficult to give a synopsis of all seven books due to the fact that they ecompass many storylines which are interwoven together and many primary characters are not introduced until later books. I will therefore only give details of the first book, Outlander in this lens to avoid any spoilers.

At the beginning of the book we see a feisty combat nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall visiting Scotland with her husband Frank after the ending of the second world war. On a trip to a stone circle, Craigh na Dun, she is thrown back in time to 1743 in the middle of a skirmish between the Clan McKenzies and a group of English dragoons. The Scots, wary of her identity, take her with them to Castle Leoch on the suspicion that she is a spy. Claire is later sought by the corrupt captain of the British garrison and in order to protect her she has little choice to marry the young outlawed highlander Jamie Fraser. Torn between her loyalty to her husband Frank Randall and her own safety she objects to the marriage at first but having already gotten to know Jamie, she knows that he is a man filled with honour and courage who will protect her no matter what the cost. Eventually through the trust they share they fall deeply in love and create a bond so strong and passionate that nothing can tear them apart. Not even two centuries ...

The books following Outlander continue the amazing saga of these endearing and charismatic characters. Diana Gabaldon is truly an exceptional writer and her amazing ability to describe the drama, passion and violence of 18th century Scotland makes these books the most memorable I have ever read. Whilst many would describe the books as "historical romance" that is only partially true. The love story between James Alexander Malcolm McKenzie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp Randall is the backbone which runs throughout the books but to describe it as a historical romance is almost an insult to these amazing books. If you are expecting a fluffy story and a light read these books aren't for you. They are gritty, harsh, tragic and barbaric in places but this of offset with oodles of courage, determination, humour and passion.

The Exile Graphic Novel

Diana Gabaldon's first graphic novel was released in September 2010. Why is this so exciting? Well first of all it tells the story of Outlander from Jamie and Murtagh's point of view (think Midnight Sun) and secondly answers those questions that have been bugging some readers for years such as what happened to Claire's bra! The graphics are amazingly beautiful and show Diana's own interpretation of the physical appearences of the main characters Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp.

The idea of an Outlander musical wasn't something that I had considered even in the very back of my mind and if I am being totally honest I thought it was a crazy idea ... until I heard the soundtrack! The music has been written by composer Mike Gibb and he has done justice to the mood of the books without making it too caberat!

Listen to a track from the Outlander Musical ...

A beautiful piece of work composed by Mike Gibb and sung by the talented Allan Scott-Douglas.

Allan Scott-Douglas, in case you wondered, is a very tall red haired Scottish actor and singer. He is also Diana Gabaldon's choice to play Jamie in the new Outlander Movie! How is that for a recommendation? He also appears to be a really nice guy and you can follow him on twitter as @actor_allan.

Lord John Grey

The character of Lord John Grey first appears properly in the Outlander series in Voyager (although he gets a guest appearance earlier on). He is depicted as a courageous nobleman with a unrequited love for Jamie Fraser. The Lord John books are period mysteries set against the backdrop of political upheaval of the 18th century. Set within the time scale of the Outlander books and occasionally incorporating the same story lines.

Outlander Movie Casting Ideas

There have been rumours about a film or mini-series being made based on the Outlander books for some time. Back in November 2008 an option was put in from Randall Wallace (Pearle Habour/Braveheart) to produce an Outlander Movie. However nothing has been finalised. However this hasn't prevented Gabaldon fans from jumping on the casting bandwagon and making it clear just who they want to play their favourite characters.

Below are a selection of youtube videos which show their ideas. If you agree with the choices they have made please feel free to vote for them or if you have any suggestions for other video's please feel free to add them to the list.

Oh, Yes! I can't wait to see the next book, but I don't want it to be over....I do wish they'd make the movie. I really enjoyed seeing the possible Claires, Jamies, Briannas, Rogers and all the rest. I just hope if the movie is ever made, they don't ruin it with poor casting. Great lens--thumbs up!

diana is one of the best authors I have ever read (she'd be in my top two! Anyway, love her stuff - I thought great fiction was dead, didn't read fiction for many years, until I discovered Outlander... thank you Diana, love them all! Chris Hemsworth to me is Jamie through and through... give him long red hair and let him roam over that scottish accent (you KNOW he can do it) with his 6'3" frame - grace, strength and emotion that he is quite capable of portraying... I like Emily Blunt for Claire, but am open to other realistic suggestions...

Part of a compilation Diana has written a short (by her standards) story which stands as a prequel to the original Outlander series. It tells the story of Jerry MacKenzie and explains his somewhat mysterious disappearance during WWII. It's a really beautiful story and the twisting of the plot links the past with the future!
