Getting to Know the Gabe Dixon Band
Earlier this year I was poking around the internet and stumbled upon a fairly recent video of a song called "All Will Be Well". I listened and thought to myself, here's a new band that my husband would really like.
If you sift through the old stuff that my spouse still covets, you find artists like Paul Simon, James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Jackson Brown, Billy Joel, Bruce Hornsby, Carole King and the like. He was never a heavy metal or dance fan. He likes the story tellers, the pianists, and the acoustic guitars. Even with no musical knowledge I knew immediately that this pop/rock, sometimes folk tinged or soulful music would be appreciated.
It seems we seldom get to hear the newer bands or any indie artists. So after reviewing the "All Will Be Well" video, we decided it was time to become a bit better aquainted with the Gabe Dixon Band.
Who is the Gabe Dixon Band?
It turns out that the Gabe Dixon Band actually formed back in 1998 although with a somewhat different format than what we hear today. The current group is a trio with Gabe Dixon playing keyboards and singing lead vocals. Winston Harrison plays bass and backup vocals and Jano Rix is on drums/backup vocals.Gabe, as it turns out is a trained classical pianist and his talent and skill with the keyboard leads the band.

An Earlier Work
After searching out some other work by the band, I discovered I had actually heard them before. In fact, the Gabe Dixon Band had done a cover of Steve Wonder's "A Place in the Sun" for the movie Charlotte's Web. A kid's movie of course and a very uplifting tune but I felt they did it justice and recall liking it following the film. You can listen to it below.
Find Out More About the Gabe Dixon Band
The Gabe Dixon Band is a three-piece band that was formed in the fall of 1998 at the University of Miami. Their music is piano-driven rock akin to Ben Folds Five with a more serious tone, Jackson Browne and early 70s Elton John. The band worked with producer/engineer Eddie Kramer on their independently released debut album, More Than It Would Seem, in 1999. They relocated to New York City after graduation and were signed to Reprise by David Kahne. After Dixon respectfully declined the keyboard position on the Paul McCartney world tour to instead focus on production of the band's major label debut, On A Rolling Ball was released in 2002.
Their song "All Will Be Well" off of the 2005 EP Live at World Cafe rose to moderate prominence when it was used in promos for the NBC show Conviction.
The band released their debut album for Fantasy Records, The Gabe Dixon Band, in August 2008. In its initial days of release, it has received praise from the music press and fellow artists. The band are also set to tour the United States from Aug 2008 thru Nov 2008 with native New Yorker turned Canadian resident, newcomer Justin Nozuka.
The song Find My Way was the opening track to the film The Prop...
More About the Music
There have been four releases over the years from the Gabe Dixon Band. 2000 was the first with "More Than It Would Seem", then in 2002 "On a Rolling Ball Came Out", followed by 2005's "Live at World Cafe".The most recent, and probably their best effort is "The Gabe Dixon Band" released in 2008. I think the band is still evolving and we've yet to see all that they can do, it's exciting to watch them grow!

- I first heard Gabe Dixon Band on Craig Ferguson one night. The guy blew me away. So much talent oozing out of him. When he plays the piano, it's like coming home for him. He is doing exactly what God wants him to do with his life. Or as he calls it in one of his songs, "I'm practicing my purpose."
