About Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

Dedicated to ongoing information about Gabrielle Giffords - who has made a remarkable recovery from her head injuries following a shooting that took place on January 8, 2011 - this page highlights those issues important to the Arizona Congresswoman.

Happily, she made a return to Congress in August, 2011 to cast her vote in favor of the important bill to avoid US economic default.

Towards the end of January 2012, Gabrielle Giffords resigned from her position as Congresswoman to concentrate on making a full recovery from the injuries she endured just a year earlier.

About the Second Amendment

The Right to Bear Arms: Have Your Say

Gabrielle Giffords is a strong supporter of our right to bear arms. In the aftermath of the Tucson shooting Arizona's less than restrictive laws on gun ownership and purchases may well come into challenge. Have your say about the Second Amendment and gun control.

Do we have the right to bear arms?

Loading

Absolutely YES because...

TylaMac says:

We do have a Constitutional right to bear arms in the United States and I support that. However, I believe that people who have a history of violent behavior forfeit that right. There is a movement to allow felons to carry guns after they are released from prison. That's just insane to me.

JDWheeler says:

We sure do. After all, people kill people, not guns. Cars can run over someone in a heartbeat. Are we going to outlaw cars?

Joan4 says:

Absolutely yes! If we are required to give up our firearms, we lose our independence as individual human beings living in a free country. I do think, though, that there need to be rules to keep disturbed young (and old) people from buying guns.

nightbear says:

I don't want to see any rights being removed that were instituted by the founding fathers of this country. But lets look at the country we live in now. A lot of very disturbed people on the streets, people that were released from mental institutions because the government changed the rules or ran out of money. Prison inmates being released despite the severity of the crime due to overcrowding. Drugs and druglords and drug runners in every city. An economy that has the whole nation if not world on the edge, not sure what to try next to make ends meet and crime is looking more attractive out of desperation. I am not trying to paint a dark picture, there is an awful lot of good in the world too. Just look around you here at Squidoo for example. I am just saying things are wildly out of control with a government that reduces the size of police and firefighters because of budget issues. It seems like a world gone mad. And I admit, I am afraid of the hands those guns are in, and the stress those gun owners are under.

Absolutely NO because...

CastleRoy says:

I think you have a right to protect your family but with pepper spray or stun guns I do not believe in taking a life when other products are available 7 to 10 children die in home gun accidents a year even 1 is to many it. I think the risk to what happened to Gabby is higher and gangs shooting the innocent. most guns are from theft of homes cars and shops as well over seas smuggling if we cant mange it on the theft part we will never have the time to manage smuggling. also I fear the generation rising up being desensitized as they are from gaming and tv violence you will see someone very upset.weather depressed suicide or girlfriend break up lead to more deaths. but the biggest is we have other methods like stun guns now then to kill I am for life not death.

Waxing-Lyrical says:

I have to agree wholeheartedly with my English friend below and echo her comment.

aj2008 says:

If there was a sort of middle option here, I think my response would fall between the yes and no option!

Much as I love all my American friends on Squidoo, as an English woman who does not have the right to bear arms, I cannot agree that just anyone can be allowed to walk into a store and buy firearms. There's just too many people who abuse the right that was granted to your people at a time when life was a lot cheaper than it is today.

I envy you your American Constitution - we have nothing like it in the UK - because it is something that binds you together as a nation, which has to be a good thing.

However, unless your right to bear arms is supported by far stricter controls, then this sort of tragedy is going to be played out time and time again. For me that is too high a price to pay.

But I guess a lot of how people feel is almost part of our evolution. Americans are used to having that right, us Brits are used to not having that automatic right. We are used to having to apply for the right to have firearms and even then the application process is sometimes not sufficient to prevent shooting spree tragedies. We had two in the UK last year, when mentally unstabled people had licensed firearms. However, I am sure that these tragedies would happen even more frequently without the controls we have here in the UK.

A Personal Message From Gabrielle Giffords

Transcript from the following video:

Arizona is my home, always will be. A lot has happened over the past year. We cannot change that. But I know on the issues we fought for we can change things for the better. Jobs, border security, veterans. We can do so much more by working together. I don't remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice. Thank you for your prayers and for giving me time to recover. I have more work to do on my recovery so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week. I'm getting better. Every day, my spirit is high. I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country. Thank you very much.

I'm a RN for 15 years trying to get a message to Senator Giffords in regard to Ambien and it's use with traumatic injuries. This could possibly help any remaining deficits she currently has. Or perhaps improve the deficits as it has in severe injured patients. Here's hoping someone 2000 miles away can get a message out. Here's one article.

What happened was tragic, just like the recent even in Norway where 75+ people were killed.

If it were me, there wouldn't be firearms any more, nowhere... but I'm like everyone on here: a simple citizen of the world.

May all these people rest in peace.

Saw about it in the news here a while ago but didn't know much details. What an awful incident but glad that she's healing. My prayers for other victims too.

I agree that this shouldn't happen, it was a miserable event, but I am glad that Gabrielle Giffords is strong and determined and she is progressing well, I hope and pray for a full recovery for her.
About the deep question that is good or bad to have arms, in American cultures, this is a Constitution issue, so I am not qualified to answer.

I'm very happy Congresswoman Giffords is mending .. since my own husband once suffered a head injury I know full well the issues that that family may face. My heart out to those who were injured and the families of those who died during this horrible event.

I echo the comments here and join in the prayers for Congresswoman Giffords as well as the others who were injured and the families of those who died during this horrible event.

This is a dreadful event. It is headline news over here, not just because of the tragic loss of so many innocent lives, but because of the way someone who is obviously mentally imbalanced has taken a political campaign too literally. Also because Sarah Palin is involved, albeit indirectly.

And yes, the US Gun laws are once again being fiercely debated.

This is a horrible situation-and it really saddens my heart to see such things happening. My prayers go out to all of the families.

This page is a wonderful idea and I hope everyone joins our prayers for Congresswoman Giffords, others who were injured and the families of those who died. The entire scene was horrific and I am deeply saddened by the cruel loss of life and injuries.
