On December 23, 1994, Gagauzia became a "national-territorial autonomous unit" within Moldavia. The date is now a Gagauzian holiday. Many European human-rights organizations have recognized Gagauzia as a successful model for resolving ethnic conflict. But the Russia/Georgia conflict, and Gagauzia's speedy recognition of the separatist "states" of Abkhazia and South Ossetia may change that.
