Meet Gaia!

She's the furry little one on the left, just in case you didn't realize it :)

She is the newest addition to our home, and one that is loved very much.

As you can see by her cuddling up to her 13 year old sister, Loops, she fits into this family very well. We are glad to have her in our home, and strive to educate everyone we meet about how wonderful and loving a pitt bull really can be.

I hope you enjoy her lens!

All About Me

My name is Sylvia, I am a wife, and I am a mother to 5 children, and 7, yes 7, furbabies, including my sweet little Gaia.

I was raised in a home of rescue animals, everything from dogs, cats, iguanas and more. I could not imagine my life without animals in it, and love ones of all sorts and shapes.

As you can imagine we have a very busy home, and I wouldn't have it any other way. This lens is dedicated to my little girl, Gaia.

How Gaia Joined Our Family

I'm addicted to searching sites like Kijiji. As a mother of 5 I am always looking for deals to help my family. And on occasion I stumble across the pets ads to see what they are offering. And this is how I came across my sweet little Gaia.

We already owned Ash, so the thought of getting him a playmate was already on our mind. But if we did get him a playmate she would have to be perfect. We wanted a breed smaller then him (you know, as not to emasculate him), we wanted her to be a pretty girl, and well, she had to be black. (Both my husband and I love black, only colour we wear, our dogs needed to match us.)

So one day I see this gorgeous little puppy. All black except for a cute little white belly, and her front paw. And she looked perfect. But then came the thought, she's a pitbull. I had heard all those horror stories, but had never really come across an animal I couldn't love. And so I did my research, talked with my husband, and took the leap. As long as she was well trained, and socialized, there would be no issue.

So me and Angel (my eldest daughter) went to go look at her. It wasn't certain yet she was to come home with us. We really needed to see how she was, before we said yes. We walked in the door and were greeted not by some mean spirited pup, but by a loveable, playful ball of fur. She gave kisses and wagged her tail till I thought her bum may fall off. And instantly we knew. The myths and lies about pitbulls were just that. I had never in my life met such an affectionate, loving puppy.

And we brought her home.

She was scared to meet the rest of the family (particularly the other fur babies) but greeted everyone with kisses.

And has been a mama's suck ever since.

The History Behind The Name Gaia

Our male's name is Ash. He is a loveable black lab cross. We had to have a pretty little girl to keep him company, and to grow old with.

Gaia just came to us naturally. I am a big believer in paganism, and wicca and all things related. And a name like Gaia just seemed to suit the little girl. It just seemed like the perfect name.

Gaia in greek mythology is the mother Goddess of earth and nature. What better name for a sweet little girl, full of life, full of love, and of course, a little girl!

From Wikipedia:

Gaea; from Ancient Greek is the primal Greek goddess personifying the Earth, the Greek version of "Mother Nature," or the Earth Mother, of which the earliest reference to the term is the Mycenaean Greek ma-ka (transliterated as ma-ga), "Mother Gaia," written in Linear B syllabic script.[2]

Gaia is a primordial deity in the Ancient Greek pantheon and considered a Mother Titan or Great Titan.

And so, we gave her the name Gaia, which she proudly owns.

A Day In The Life Of Gaia

Gaia is a very happy go lucky girl.

She loves her little girls (Alexzandria and Angel) and greets all the children with kisses each and every morning.

The day starts with her and Ash in their bed in mommy and daddy's room.

Upon the door being opened the stampede of dogs to the front door begins! Both her and Ash race to the door to see who will be the first one let out for the morning.

They greet each other at the door and parade into the living room to work out, and practice their wrestling (which they have both gotten quite good at!)

From there starts breakfast. A healthy, hearty meal of dog food, and a nice cold bowl of water.

And then the day really begins. Gaia follows mommy around the house all morning, cept when she visits daddy in the bathroom for his morning shower (oh how she loves to lick her water).

Then it's play time and cuddle time with the kids, and resting on mommy's feet as she works.

A nightly walk after dinner ensures Gaia keeps her beautiful shapely figure, followed by some romping in the backyard with her partner in crime, and then collapsing onto the couch till bedtime is called and kisses are given to children as they prepare to close their eyes for the night.

Then the long night of relaxing begins in a nice quiet house (except for the occasional race or wrestling match with Ash or one of the smaller furbabies aka cats).

And then morning brings a new start to playtime.

It's not the breed, it's the owner.

Don't discriminate against an entire breed based on a few bad apples!

Gaia is beautiful. And I completely agree it is the PR about the breed, spread by some really cruel idiots. Nicely done.

Awesome lens. Definitely more about the owner than the breed. Keep spreading awareness:)!

Gaia reminds me of my Sadie, the best pets ever :)

I agree that Pitbulls are the most misunderstood. A lot has to do with how you treat an animal. Great lens.

This is a lovely lens written with passion and animal love. I hope you are right about your little friend. Unfortunately it was pitt bull that attacked my last dog, Boss, who had his abdomen ripped and was bitten so badly in the genitals that he could not urinate for over 36 hours, *-*Blessed*-* and featured on Angel Blessings for Dogs on Squidoo.

I am so glad I came across this lens. At the BuckHawk Center, we have 3 beautiful bully ladies awaiting adoption and all are the sweetest and dearest girls. We have multiple black lab mixes, too. You touched my heart in loving not just bullys, but black dogs, too! Gaia is one of the lucky ones, thanks to you and your family. Angel blessed from the Dog Patrol and featured on Angel Flys Over Dog Lenses.

Love this page! You will be lensrolled and favorited. I'm also a proud Pit Bull owner. I don't think I'll ever have another breed of dog.

Thank you for visiting, and for the blessing! I am very much a proud pitty mama. Like you I don't think I would ever get a different breed after seeing how wonderful she is with the kids and other animals and just in general.

Grendel was my Staffordshire Terrier (mid-sized Pitbull) - best dog I've ever met.

Gaia is on the smaller side of the spectrum, she only weighs 45 lbs and is a far bit tinier than our retreiver. Thanks for dropping by.

Pitbulls are definitely a fine breed, the only problem pitbulls have problem owners
  • SylviaRolfe Mar 27, 2011 @ 10:41 am | delete
That is all too true. I sometimes just shake my head and laugh when people talk about how they'd be afraid to have a pitt around their children. If only they knew. Thanks for stopping by.

They are the greatest breed. If we were to ever get more dogs, they would for sure be bullys. Thanks for stopping by!
