Can Gaining Mass for Hardgainers be Done?

The quest for a beautiful body is hardly a new thing, but increasingly we see evidence that people who are attractive, fit and well muscled get special treatment and end up more successful in life. Skinny guys who realize this face a dilemma however because gaining mass for hardgainers who have genetics that keep off fat AND muscle is really difficult.

I say difficult because it is NOT impossible, many skinny guy hardgainers have managed to defeat their skinny genetics and get built through months to years of hard training.

While there are many scientific theories and physiological ways to build muscle mass in hard gainers that prove it IS possible you must also first have the mindset to not be a hardgainer anymore.

Call yourself a gradual gainer.
Call yourself an incremental gainer.
Call yourself a slow gainer even.


But hardgainer often actually sounds like NO gainer so dump this term from your vocabulary!

How do Hardgainers Gain Mass?

The truth is that skinny guys build muscle just like everyone else. The same things happen when you workout to other genetically bigger guys as they do to you. The foods you eat follow similar metabolic processes and your body heals and repairs muscles in the same way.

So why then does it feel so hard to gain muscle mass when you are a so called hardgainer? The difference lies primarily in your metabolism.

Skinny guys are so skinny because the calories you eat are metabolized and burned up so fast there is nothing left to be stored as fat cells. This is a double edged sword as it also means there is very little left to be used to build and repair muscles too.

This may simply mean you need to eat a lot more but there is more to it than that!

You must eat enough calories to sustain your resting metabolism plus enough calories that will be used up from exercise and STILL have enough left to power muscle growth when you rest and sleep after a strenuous workout.

Talking about rest, you must also make sure that you DO get enough rest for your body to switch into "repair" mode so that energy is directed to your muscles. IF you workout too soon after a previous workout you may be wasting energy and not building muscle. IT is also important to note that good, long, uninterrupted sleep is excellent for muscle growth because growth hormones are released when you sleep too.

Lastly HOW you lift weights is vital to your skinny to muscle success. You need to give your muscles a REASON to grow. Your muscle would prefer to sleep and do nothing and only react when they are put under pressure. This means if you do not push them to the maximum of their abilities then you can never expect to reach maximum muscle growth either.

All this differs from other body types only in intensity and application. Someone gifted genetically to grow muscle may only adhere to some of these rules and get great muscle mass growth for instance but as a skinny guy you need to be much more disciplined,

What Kills Gaining Mass for Hardgainers?

There are many things you make mistake with to destroy your skinny to muscle efforts. Not eating enough calories or the wrong sort of foods to get those calories. Poor workout intensity and style. Poor rest and recovery and so forth. However the biggest mistakes you can make occur in the MIND not the BODY.

What really kills your muscle building efforts is a lack of planning, a lack of information and a lack of understanding of the details that every serious body builder should know whether you are trying to enter competitions or if you are just trying to look ripped for your own self esteem.

The mental game you must play with yourself with motivation however is the largest killer to gaining mass for hardgainers because this is not going to be easy, this is not going to take a short period of time and it will mean making sacrifices in your life to achieve the ripped body that you want.
