A Vacation by The Sea of Galilee

My wife and I were priveledged to travel throughout Israel. There is no doubt that one of the places that holds the most impact on me, even to this day, is Galilee. There is an essence that fills that place with a presence ever-so unforgettable. The early morning sunrises, late evening sunsets, the calmness of the sea and much more made Galilee a place of more than just a memory...

Our journey began in Tiberias

The Sea of Galilee and the surrounding townships are of more than coincidental significance. Some consider this place a type of an earthly Garden of Eden. It was here by these waters that Jesus chose His first disciples and eagerly preached the gospel of the Kingdom of God. According to the Jews, Tiberias is of great significance right along with Jerusalem, Hebron and Safed. At one point Tiberias was the location for the high courts and priests known as the Sanhedrin. There was also a Christian community here. Several churches were built especially during the Byzantine and Crusader eras. One of these Crusader churches was dedicated to St. Peter.

Mt. of Beatitudes

This is where Jesus gave His most famous Sermon on the Mount. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:3 It was a most reverent place. Today a Catholic church, monastery and hostel stand here surrounded by beautiful gardens. The church, built in 1936-38, was under the special care and architecture of Barluzzi. The building is octagonal representing the eight Beatitudes. From here you overlook the beautiful Sea of Galilee.

Tabgha (Heptapegon) "Seven Springs"

Here in Tabgha you will find two most significant places, The Church of the Feeding of the Multitude and The Church of the Primacy of St. Peter. A sanctuary dedicated to Peter stands on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee in Tabgha. Built by the Franciscans in 1933, this site holds tradition that Jesus appeared to his disciples following the resurrection and restored Simon Peter here following his denials. A flat rock known as the "Mensa Christi" of "Christ's Table" marks the site where the disciples ate that day.

These words were inscribed below the statue.

CAPERNAUM

Jesus made His way home to Capernaum by the sea...Matthew 4:12-13 Jesus chose to make Capernaum His headquarters, if you will, for the ministry. In Capernaum Jesus called disciples, befriended tax collectors, healed the sick and preached to the multitudes. You read of this in the gospels. Jesus performed a wonderful miracle here by raising Jairus' daughter from the dead. Capernaum is also located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee. This village flourished until around the 7th and 8th centuries A.D. Located here is the remains of an elaborate synagogue that is dated back to the first century A.D. building. Next to this is a dwelling which, historically, is known as the home of St. Peter.

This could have very well been a boat that Jesus used during that time!

In Joppa, a local township and harbor off the sea, dwells the house of Simon the Tanner

Here in the book of Acts you see the word "Tanner" mentioned the only time in the bible. Peter stayed here at Simon's House while he brought the gospel to the people there.
