Gallery Walks | First Fridays

Recurring Festivities Add Sparkle

Many communities create festive monthly events focused on the visual and performing arts to entice people to socialize in their business districts. Often these events take place monthly on first Friday evenings.

That's the case in Sarasota located on the west coast of Florida where the First Friday Palm Avenue Walk features monthly themes and live entertainment. You can learn to tango on the sidewalk or gallery hop. In the Towles Court Artist Colony near Downtown Sarasota, gallery walks take place on third Fridays.

When galleries coordinate their art show openings, they often draw more people to their showrooms. Also, less serious collectors feel more comfortable attending these casual evenings that mimic pub crawls with sideshows such as belly dancers and street singers.

Among the other U.S. cities with art-oriented First Friday events are: Albany, Anchorage, Augusta, Brattleboro, Burlington, Chicago, Columbus, Denver, Flagstaff, Honolulu, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Juneau, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kansas City, Knoxville, Louisville, Las Vegas, Oakland, Oshkosh, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Raleigh, Richmond, Rochester, San Antonio, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Sebring, St. Petersburg, Tallahassee and more.

Toronto, Canada, features an art gallery walk monthly on First Thursdays, except for January, in Yorkville.

Please add your recommendations for other communities to include. Gallery walks draw crowds with great entertainment and cultural offerings.
