Are you interested in understanding gambling addiction and compulsive gambling behaviour? Would you like to know where to get help to stop gambling?

Gambling is a pastime that provides alot of fun and excitement. Unfortunately in some cases the very nature of the gambling experience can create problems for people who play. The dark side of gambling is gambling is gambling addiction and compulsive gambling behaviour. That's when some people seek gambling addcition treatement. Gambling addiction has grown since gambling has arrived on the internet which has created an increase in online gambling addiction revealed by gambling addiction statistics. The result of this has been an increasing number of people who are seeking gambling addiction help and looking for gambling addiction information.

The excitement of gambling stimulates the brain to produce 'happy chemicals' called endorphins which can have addictive results. Gambling can also become a compulsive habit because of the way it allows people complete freedom to make risky decisions. This 'freedom' is experienced in contrast to daily life where most of us have to be abide by social and legal rules of some sort. This means that ordinary living becomes mundane and the gambling life becomes exciting and appealling.

In other cases gambling is seen as a path to riches. Statistics show that in hard economic times participation in gambling increases. For most this isn't a problem and for a few the compulsion to chase losses is too strong. This compulsion has a name. Its called the Gamblers Fallacy and it explains how gamblers rationalise the urge to keep spending by believing 'just one more go' will result in a win.

Gamblers are more pre-disposed to chase winnings if they have experienced a big win early on in their gambling lives. This confirms in their minds that they are 'winners'. Or they have invested a great deal in losses. In all cases problem gambling is the result of a misunderstanding of statistics and a mistaken faith in one's ability to control outcomes.

The fact is gambling games are designed to have one winner in the long run and one winner alone. That is the 'house' or the person running the game and short of cheating (which is very difficult to do) there isn't a way to consistently come out on top despite what tricks and methods are sold on the internet.

The Gambler's Career Path

gambling-addiction gamblers career path

Progression to compulsive gambling is often explained by the idea of the so called Gamblers Career Path. Psychologists use a standard screeening process called the DSM IV instrument to assess people for the position on the path.

The idea is that gamblers progress through phases in their gambling attitudes and behaviour. Basically this means that there is potential to move along a path from:

Novice - intermittent low level gambling - having a 'flutter'
Regular - gambling is a key component of leisure and social activity
Professional - gambling is a sole & possibly solo component of leisure activity
Compulsive - gambling is a dominant component of existance displaying all the characteristics of an addiction

In Pathological Gambling: Roots, Phases, and Treatment, by Henry R. Lesieur and Robert L. Custer © 1984 American Academy of Political and Social Science. The authors talk about the roots, causes and phases of pathological gambling in which they describe:

The Adventurous or Winning phase
The Losing phase
The Desperation phase

Whilst some commentators argue that merely starting to gamble will lead to compulsion it is generally accepted that it is not necessarily the case that this will happen. This Help Guide explains more about recognising signs of compulsion.

The Illusion of Control

roulette-gambling-gambling addiction

The idea of the Illusion of Control comes from the work of psychologist Ellen Langar who wrote a paper on the subject in 1975. As the name suggests the illusion of control is about the way in which people can have the mistaken belief that they can either a) control or predict gambling outcomes or that they can b) control their behaviour and stop gambling whenever they wish.

The tendency to 'rationalise' rather than be rational in gambling situations is wonderfully summed in the title of another paper by Langar called Heads I Win Tails Its Chance

Arousal and Sensation Seeking

Chasing the 'big-hit'

thrill-seeking gambling-thrill gambling excitement

One of the appeals of gambling is the 'buzz' you get. Psychologists study this and call the subject the study of Sensation Seeking and Arousal.

Key writers in this area include Iain Brown and Marvin Zuckerman. Brown also wrote an interesting paper on relapse which includes an explanatory diagramatic map of arousal and pleasure dimensions in that context.

The key ideas are that gambling exposes people to so called 'disinhibiting' and stimulating environments. Iain Brown said that some of his most frequent counselling subjects were high flying businessmen who spent most of their day in highly regulated social environments in high pressure jobs. When these people went to casinos the 'cork' popped out of the bottle so to speak and made them more susceptible to excessive gambling. For more on this read:

Gamblers Arrogance

or Gamblers Conceit

gamblers-conceit gamblers-arrogance

Problems can occur when gamblers believe they can stop whenever they want. They sincerely believe they can resist the urge to 'have just one more bet'

Economist David Ewing defines it as "the mistaken belief that one will be able to stop performing a risky action while one continues to succeed or win at it"

The factors of personality that might contribute to pathological gambling are impulsivity, coping ability, a susceptibility to depression and a person's proneness to substance abuse. This is more fully discussed in Kory Roshina's paper, Factors Contributing to the Development of Pathological Gambling
