Gambrel Roof Pole Barn Plans

This stage will be the most important stage among the other stages. It is important to know "where are you going". If you don't know how does the end result, how are you going to "get there"? Every decision is entirely up to you. Firstly you will need to determine the number of trusses you need for your gambrel roof according to the size of the building you are constructing. The spacing between roof trusses is 16 inches on center.

You will need to decide how tall would you like to make your gambrel roof? Different heights for your gambrel roof will require different measurements. A 36 foot wide building will need a 10 foot 4 inch high ceiling whereas a 16 foot wide building will need a 5 foot 2 inch high ceiling. Whatever it is, it is entirely up to you. But always put this is mind that upper section of a gambrel roof pole barn has a 30 degree angle and the lower section has a 60 degree angle.

It may be difficult for you to develop your own plan if you have not develop one before. You can choose whether or not to purchase your own gambrel roof plan or ask for a professional help to come over to your place and decide for your plan.

At this stage, you are ready to start. This is where the real work is going to start. In this stage also you will need to make the roof trusses by using those lumber. 2 x 6 inch lumber works just fine. You can easily get this lumber which available at any building supply store or lumber yard. Before building your first truss, find a level section of ground to lay out the lumbers. Employ stakes driven into the ground to help you hold the lumber in place.

As you lay out those lumbers, mark the lumber at the points where it needs to cut as well as the angles needed to build the gambrel roof. Carefully cut them and use these pieces as the template to cut the other lumber for the rest of the trusses for your gambrel roof pole barn. Trace the angles of the trusses onto cardboard and use them as patterns to create brackets. Bear in mind that you will find two bracket shapes: ones that are angled like "doglegs" and other are triangular.

You will need to assemble all of the trusses for the gambrel roof on the ground. Then use the stakes driven into the ground to keep the lumber in place until you are able to secure it together. Make sure to attach the braces to all of the trusses joints using the 8 penny nails. If you want to make the joints reinforce further, try tying them together with strap metal. Finish the truss by securing a 2 x 6 inch board between the dogleg braces. This will act as a joint and a stiffener.

To raise up the trusses into position, lift it very carefully that each truss is plumb and straight before you nail it to the joint of the lower floor as you build the gambrel roof pole barn. It is important to secure a temporary brace in between each truss as you build a gambrel roof. This brace helps to keep each truss straight. During raising the truss, lay a ¾-inch plywood on the trusses for roof sheathing as you build gambrel roof. This will depend on the area of the country in which you are living. Cover the plywood with a waterproof layer, then finish the roof with shingle or roof material to protect the material.

After you have assemble and raise up those trusses, cut studs for the end walls when you build a gambrel roof. These studs need to fit within the slope of the roof by cutting notches into the trusses and angles in the studs so that both can fit together. This will be optional, but it is important also for you to include frames in any design of window that you wish and install them.

As for conclusion, it is very important to have a set of plan before you start developing your own gambrel roof. Without any good set of plan you will end up making many mistake as you can easily skip an IMPORTANT steps. Having a good set of plan will prevent you from any dangerous disaster that could happen.
