Digital Game Camera Tips

From the maker of high-performance digital trail cameras, Moultrie Feeders

  • Mounting - Make sure to mount the camera waist high, level with the ground, and aim away from the rising or setting sun. The heat from the sun can essentially trick the camera into thinking it senses an animal's body heat, resulting in 'blank' pictures
  • Use an SD Card for added memory - These cards can hold from 500 to over 1,000 pictures! Remember, you must have your camera off to install the card. SD cards can be purchased from any electronics store such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City or Radio Shack. We recommend a quality brand name such as Sandisc, Kodak and Panasonic.
  • Battery Life - Use good quality, name brand batteries for the longest life.
  • Determining Delay Time - Shorter delay times should be used on trails, when animals are just passing by. Longer time delays are used on food plots and mineral licks or by feeders, when the animals will be lingering in the area.

Tips for Protecting your Game Cameras

With the growing popularity of game cameras, it is important to protect your camera from thieves and animals.

Here are a few tips to help safeguard your game camera.

  • Use a protective housing. It is great way to protect valuable scouting cameras from both theft and animals.

  • When using a game camera in bear country it is important to wipe down your camera with scent eliminating wipes since bears are often drawn to human scent. Be sure to wash your hands before handling your game camera if you are setting it up over a bait station. Many hunters make the mistake of setting bait and then adjusting the camera. This places the scent from the bait onto the camera, drawing the bears attention to the camera.

  • Protect game cameras from thieves by placing them in high-traffic deer areas, but low-traffic human areas. Try a secondary trail.

  • Try an infrared game camera that have no visible white flash to draw attention to the camera's location

Trail Camera Resources

An Introduction to Trail Cameras
Not long ago trail timers were a new invention allowing us to record when an animal traveled a given path. This was great, but we still couldn't identify the animal. Thanks to recent innovations, those timers have evolved. No longer limited to logging time and date alone, today's trail cameras capture the image on film. This advent is literally revolutionizing the way we hunt. Whether used during the off-season or in concert with our daily hunting routines, trail cameras have a multitude of applications year around. Thanks to these little beauties armed with an infrared sensor beam, anything that passes in front of the camera is captured on film.
Trail Cameras: Toys No More
Sure, it's a lot of fun to set out a camera or two and try to capture an image of a big buck. Some hunters even have used them to pinpoint good stand sites. But these devices hold so much more potential.
The Trail Camera Addiction
Trail camera nuts are addicted to the pursuit of wild animal photos. We are constantly on the lookout for that perfect intersecting trail with just the right tree adjacent to it. We scour our favorite hunting spots and lay awake at night dreaming about that monster buck we just know is going to show up and pose perfectly so we can count all his tines and map out his mass and width.
Trophy Shots
In the world of scouting cameras, a picture may be worth more than a thousand words.

The I 40 is a nice camera although I have had to return it 3 times for problems. I have great pictures of deer, coyotes, turkeys, rabbits and squirls. I would like to see a camo coating applied like they currently use on gun stocks. I also think that a security passwork installed by the owner should be an option. This would make the camera useless for anyone not authorized by the owner of the camera. These two features should not effect the price enough to lose sales and would draw in people afraid of loosing the camera as it now is sold.

I am pleased with my results the IR Camera unit works well. good pix and video
Suggestion..make the default night video either adjustable or longer.. 5 secs is short
Do you sell custom camo sleeves for the camera? regards

Due to the amount of power lost with a longer cord, 10 feet is going to be the longest that a cord can be to effectively power the camera.
  • Jack Feb 27, 2009 @ 5:46 pm | delete
Does anyone sell an adaptor cord for the power panel? The 10 ft cord does not cut it. A 50 ft cord would be great.

Yes, Moultrie is proud to announce an all new game camera system that utilizes a Cellular Modem. See the Press Release.
