Martin announced the order soon after it was made, with the caveat that "It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.
"It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful."
Current reports suggest the plan, if the pilot is picked up, is to have one season correspond roughly to one novel.
So, as Martin said, let's all hope that the pilot kicks serious ass, and make our support for the project loud and clear.

- I made this site so that I could put who I think should be cast in a Song of Ice and Fire movie/mini-series/TV-show/whatever if one was ever made, but now it has been confirmed that HBO has optioned A Song of Ice and Fire. This certainly isn't the end folks, while this cast list has too many big-budget names to ever happen, it can now be thought of as a dream cast list.
