Minetest C55 is the perfect free game like Minecraft, if this game didn't have a different name you would swear it actually was Minecraft.

Minetest C55 has been around since 2010 and is slowly being developed to include all of Minecraft's features, it was created and is constantly developed by celeron55 (so round of applause to him).

Minetest C55 aims to be simple, stable and portable, this philosophy has allowed Minetest C55 to run smoothly on many old computer systems that cannot handle Minecraft. There isn't much more to say about Minetest C55 as the gaming experience and gameplay is exactly that of the original Minecraft but with the added benefits of being free and the ability to run on older computers and hardware. So if either of those reasons were preventing you from picking up Minecraft, consider Minetest C55 your solution.

3 - Infiniminer (PC, Free)

The Inspiration For Minecraft & Team Based Action!

Infiniminer is often credited as Notch's inspiration for creating Minecraft. Infiniminer allows you to return to the very roots of the Minecraft franchise and experience this great original.

The game was developed by Zachtronics and is considered one of the first virtual worlds that allowed players to construct and destroy various objects by gathering resources in a 3D world. It is still available for download today and offers a very unique team-based strategy experience (which feels somewhat like Team Fortress 2).

The goal of Infiniminer is to collect precious metals for your team which are scattered throughout the environment. You can build traps, devices or directly kill your enemies to prevent them from obtaining these metals or solely focus on harvesting them for your own team while avoiding the enemy team.

Infiniminer's development was unfortunately quickly stopped after its release, but is still worth playing. Either for its team-based gameplay or if you simply want to build things in a Minecraft like experience.

4 - Manic Digger (PC, Free)

Manic Digger is a simple free version of Minecraft and is a great alternative to Minecraft if you enjoy building epic monuments and creations. Being free it does not offer many of Minecraft's features but it is slowly catching up with its constant development.

Manic Digger 2011 added features include a compass, fences, ladders, monsters, dynamite, doors, block health, inventory management and more server customisation. Manic Digger has big plans for 2012 which you can find on their Development News Page.

Many players of Minecraft dislike Manic Digger due to its very similar Minecraft gameplay but you cannot argue against the fact that it provides a similar gameplay experience (and its free). The only drawback being its less-polished graphics and its development is not at the same level as Minecraft (not yet anyway).

5 - Ace of Spades (PC, Free)

Free, Action & Runs On Any Computer (Thats 3 ingredients for success)

Ace of Spades is probably the most fun I have had in a minecraft inspired game in a long time. Ace of Spades is completely free game that is best described as a mix of Minecraft, Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty.

Ace of Spades is essentially a first-person-shooter but it provides players with the added ability to create your surroundings. Build yourself a bunker to hide in or create a tunnel straight to the enemy. Ace of Spades offers two popular game types; team deathmatch and a capture the intelligence mode (basically Capture The Flag, inspired by Team Fortress 2).

Players are armed with a spade (melee weapon and to dig quickly through terrain), several grenades (to kill players and destroy terrain), 50 blocks (per re-spawn, you can change the colour at any time) and a gun of their choosing (rifle, small machine gun or a shotgun). All of the weapons in Ace of Spades feature realistic sounds and even recoil.

Ace of Spades features very simple graphics allowing it to run on any computer and should not be considered a disadvantage (although some people may be turned off by it).

Ace of Spades is an extremely fun game like minecraft and is a must download for Minecraft and Call of Duty fans alike.

6 - Blockland (PC, $19.95)

Lego Style Minecraft

Blockland is often considered the lego version of Minecraft. The characters and the world (built entirely by the player) are very blocklike as if they are indeed made of lego blocks, which makes for an enjoyable and friendly art style.

The game itself offers many fun adventures and mini-games to keep the player interested and is less focused on mining and gathering materials compared to Minecraft. Instead Blockland encourages players to build objects of a grand scale and incorporate the amazing Physics Engine in the design or use it to destroy your creation (much more fun).

7 - Roblox (PC - Browser, Free)

($11.95+ Monthly For Premium) - A Social & Creative Game

Roblox may not appeal to everyone that is looking for a game like Minecraft but it has some worthy features that make it worth its inclusion in this list of 18 Minecraft alternatives (being free is one of them).

Firstly, Roblox is focused solely on being social and creative, all the levels that are playable on Roblox have been designed by users (making for a large variant of game types and levels to play). You can either stick to maps created by other users or share your own creations (and hopefully reach the most popular list!). Chances are you will definitely find a map that you enjoy amongst the thousands of different options which is the strongest advantage of Roblox (you can find FPS, RPG, racing games and many others).

Roblox offers complete character customisation through Robux and also offers a premium subscription called The Builder's Club. A free account however is more than enough to experience this fantastic game and is completely playable within your internet browser.

8 - Cubelands (PC - Browser, Free)

Playable In Your Browser

Cubelands is another game like Minecraft and can even be considered a direct competitor. Cubelands is focused more on the building aspect without the need to dig endlessly for resources (no crafting aswell). For those of you with creative minds you will feel right at home with Cubelands.

Cubelands is free to play within your web browser (awesome!) but does have a premium membership feature. It is available for both PC and Mac and has more recently been acquired by Upjers, meaning more server room and more regularly updates.

The multiplayer of Cubelands is also alot cleaner and easier to use making it a great game to play with a bunch of friends. Create your own world, get community support and then share your creations with the community.

9 - King Arthur's Gold (PC, Free)

(Premium $25) - Like Minecraft, But Enjoyably Different.

King Arthur's Gold is a game like Minecraft that lets players build castles, mine minerals and fight enemies. This fast paced 2D action game focuses on players building weapons of destruction (or defensive) to help them destroy their enemy.

King Arthur's Gold features three playable classes: the Knight who is a brute force fighter equipped with a sword and a shield. The Archer who uses his long range and is capable of deadly ambushes. Last is the Builder who is capable of building defences and traps to defend your teams castle. So regardless of your playstyle there will be a class for you.

10 - Epic Inventor (PC, Free)

Terraria Inspired - Side-scroller, RPG and RTS!

Epic Inventor is a Terraria inspired game, so if you Terraria interests you (and the price is holding you back) Epic Inventor is a great free alternative. The game is described by its creators as 'ball of epic' and offers a mixture of side-scrolling, RPG and RTS elements. Quite frankly I have to agree with the creators on this one, the game is incredible and has accomplished so much already in its brief existence.

The start of the game involves the standard gathering of resources, while you also learn the basic game mechanics then quickly shifts its focus to building your own city, complete with lumber mills and other neat buildings that reduce the need for resource gathering (eventually). From there the player (thats you) has to defend your wonderful city from enemies using a variety of traps, turrets and defensive options. Eventually you find yourself in more of a real-time-strategy game similar to Age of Empires of Warcraft.

The game is constantly being updated and bug fixed, so its never short on content. If you do enjoy the game don't forget to donate a few dollars to keep this wonderful game free to play!

11 - Clonk Series (PC, Free/$15)

Weird Name, Awesome Game.

Clonk is a game similar to Epic Inventor, its a mixture of Terraria with RTS Age of Empire like features. The game requires you to advance your civilisation as far as possible my mining ores, wood and other resources. Similar to Epic Inventor you use these resources to create buildings that serve numerous purposes. Explore the massive generated worlds and experience varying types of terrain, changing weather conditions and unique physics.

The Clonk series is very entertaining mix of action, strategy, tactics and skill. It has multiplayer capabilities (either via a single computer, LAN or the internet) making it a great game to play with friends.

Clonk currently has 3 available versions: Clonk Endeavour (free, released in 2004), Clonk Rage ( $15, shareware, released in 2008) and the currently not released Clonk Extreme (a 3D version currently in development).

12 - Cortex Command (PC, $18)

Action Packed and Something Different.

Cortex Command is probably a stretch for most people who are looking for a game like Minecraft and I thought exactly the same until I played this great game for myself.

The game is simple enough (and addicting) by design, with the primary objective to destroy the enemies base on the various generated worlds. So what does that have to do with Minecraft? Well its the way you go about defending and attacking, it revolves around mining gold, you also are in control of building your base and have the option to create items and objects within the game (starting to sound familiar yet?)

The game also features good physics and an exciting style of gameplay. If you are a fan of the Worms series but looking for a Minecraft touch this is right down your alley (or cave?).

13 - Mythruna (PC, Free)

Still In Pre-Alpha, But Already Amazing

Mythruna is still not released but is playable in its pre-alpha test builds. So you can imagine how impressive the game must be to already have earned an inclusion on this games like Minecraft list.

Little is known about the direction that Mythruna will eventually take but its goal is to combine role play elements with an endless randomly generated sandbox world (completely living and modifiable).

The game is constantly being developed so new features and bug fixes are never far around the corner.

14 - Total Miner (Xbox, $3)

Minecraft Game For Xbox, Available From Xbox Live Indie

Total Miner (Total Miner: Forge) is a game like Minecraft published by Greenstone Games and released in late 2011 for the Xbox Live (indie game section). The game is purchasable through Xbox Live Points (Microsoft Points) and is available for only 240 points! ($3).

Total Miner plays very similar to Minecraft offering players many different game modes including Creative (unlimited resources and building blocks to be as creative as possible) and Dig Deep mode where players explore the many cave systems killing various monsters and hunting for hidden treasures.

Just like Minecraft players of Total Miner can combine resources to create various tools and resources, Total Miner also offers stores where players can purchase weapons and other items. The best feature of Total Miner is its 24 player multiplayer feature allowing you to get together with all your friends and explore your Total Miner worlds.

Total Miner offers little new content compared to Minecraft but it it a great Minecraft like game for the Xbox.

15 - FortressCraft (Xbox, $3)

Game Like Minecraft For Xbox (Available From Xbox Live Indie)

FortressCraft FortressCraft is a game like Minecraft for Xbox users and servers as a good alternative to Total Miner. It is similar to many of the other Minecraft like games in that its focus is on building and exploring and less on resource collection and tedious activities.

FortressCraft is a very cheap purchase ($3) and is available in exchange for Microsoft Points from the Xbox Live Indie Games section.

If you are an Xbox player that feels like you are missing out on Minecraft this game is for you.

16 - Eden: World Builder (iOS Device, $1)

Game Like Minecraft For Your Apple Product

Eden World Builder is minecraft for you iOS Device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) and is a bargain in the App Store at only $1 ($0.99).

The features of Eden are however somewhat limited, the game focuses on building your own creations and supplies users with an unlimited amount of blocks (it is unknown whether Eden plans to implement a survival type mode). Eden World Builder's greatest feature and the attraction of this game in general lies within the easy ability to share your creations with other Eden players. If you enjoy the building aspect of minecraft and are interested in building epic creations where ever you go (and share them with a decent sized community) Eden is well worth the purchase.

The only issue with the game is the control scheme which does take some practice to get used to and can still be annoying at times, but it is still the best creative sandbox building game available for any iOS device. Eden is currently ranked 4.5/5 stars on the iTunes websites by its customers.

17 - Survivalcraft (Windows Phone, $3)

Another Minecraft Clone For Your Phone

Survivalcraft is your answer to minecraft for the Windows Phone and is reasonably priced at $2.99. Survivalcraft currently has a 4.5/5 star rating from its users on the Windows Phone App Store.

At the start of Survivalcraft you are abandoned by a ship on the shores of a deserted (and randomly generated) world but after that point players well recognise the "all alone" feel that of those first few nights in Minecraft. Survivalcraft provides all the features that you would expect from a Minecraft clone including the standard punching trees, mining, crafting and building.

Like most phone re-creations of Minecraft it suffers the usual issue, a fiddly control scheme that makes playing sometimes more a pain than a pleasure. It's something you will get used to over time and if you spend alot of time gaming on your Windows Phone you probably will not even notice.

18 - Worldcrafter (Andriod, $1.50)

A Basic Terraria Like Game For Android

Worldcrafter is more like Terraria than Minecraft but I felt that Android owners needed a game listed on this page. Worldcrafter is nothing special when it comes to Minecraft (or Terraria) clones, but it is still fresh onto the market and is seeing constant updates.

Worldcrafter makes use of 2D side-scrolling and allows players to perform the usual tasks exploring a randomly generated world, design buildings, construct traps, grow crops, breed animals or battle a hoard of zombies.

The game has received a mixture of greetings onto the Android Market, its a game you either like or simply hate. The game won't stop your Minecraft addiction but it will at least tame it when you can't play the real thing. Unfortunately at this time there is limited gameplay footage currently available so your purchase decision will have to be based on screenshots of gameplay.
