Sochi is on the coast of the Black Sea and at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia.
The competing bids
Three candidate cities were selected by the IOC Executive Board in June 2006 as Candidate cities for the 2014 Winter Games: Sochi (Russia), Salzburg (Austria) and PyeongChang (South Korea).A further four applicant cities had been approved by their National Olympic Committees and submitted their applications to the IOC, but were not selected as candidates by the Executive board. These were Jaca (Spain), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Borjomi (Georgia).
The election by exhaustive ballot took place on July 4, 2007 in Guatemala City during the 119th IOC Session; Sochi beat out PyeongChang by four votes in the second round of voting to win the rights to host after Salzburg had been eliminated in the first round.

The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXII Olympic Winter Games, will be celebrated from February 7 to February 23, 2014. The host city, Sochi, Russia, was elected on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 during the 119th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Guatemala City, Guatemala. This will be Russia's first time hosting the Winter Olympic Games (the Soviet Union had previously hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow) and the first Russian Olympics since the fall of the Soviet Union. As well, this will become the first Winter Olympics held in the subtropics.
