Heating Options for Garage Spaces

The garage in a typical home is often poorly insulated from the outside air and rarely connected to the main home heating and cooling systems. So, staying warm in the winter months can be tough for the weekend tinkerer.

Here are a few options for keeping your garage warm this winter.

Your garage is a magical place. Preserve and protect the floor in your garage with epoxy garage floor paint.

Infrared Heater

An infrared heater is just like those warming lamps in the ceilings of some bathrooms. They emit warm infrared heat to objects directly in the path of the light.

They are cheap and easy to install, but not very useful if you need to warm a large area.

Electric Space Heater

The good old standby electric space heater is also a cheap and easy option for heating up your garage workspace. The heating elements become very hot during use, so make sure that you keep it away from combustible materials.

Some units keep the heating element enclosed in a ceramic outer coating which reduces the chances of causing fires.

Floor Warming Mats

Floor warming mats are like a heating pad for your feet. An electric heating element is embedded in a durable floor mat and provides heat at the floor level. This effectively keeps your feet warm (which will help you feel warmer all over) and natural convection currents will cause the remaining heat to rise up from the floor warming the air as well.

Kerosene Space Heater

Kerosene space heaters are classic choices for heating a garage. However, they work by burning fuel and emit carbon monoxide as a result. Proper fresh air venting is required to keep the air safe for people which might offset the benefits of having a heater in the first place.

Sealed Oil Radiator

A sealed oil radiator works like a traditional radiator. A warm fluid (oil) fills a series of radiator fins which warm the air that passes over them. As the air warms, it rises and pulls cooler air into contact with the radiator and produces a convection current that circulates the air in the room.

Sealed oil radiators get hot during use, but they do not generate enough heat to cause ignition of most flammable sources. Since they use electricity to warm the oil, they also do not produce any exhaust gasses.
