Garage Sale the "Quick and Easy" Way!

Quick and Easy Garage Sale

If you're worried that a garage sale takes a huge amount of time and that's the reason you have a bunch of stuff lying around your house you don't want... let me give you insight as to how my sister has this down to a science.

Tips to a quick and easy garage sale
1) Piggy back on another sale
2) Don't price it, put it on a "priced" table
3) Put catchy things by the road
4) Anything that doesn't sell goes to charity.

Really it's that simple... Let's start with the sign.

For years she has been using "green fringe" on her sign. It's become a trademark of her sale and helps make it quite successful. It's kind of kitchy and it works!

TIP #1: Piggy Back on Another Sale

Garage SaleThis is important! If you don't want to waste a lot of time planning a sale. Find out when is the next big sale coming up. This could be a neighborhood sale, a big family sale, or the annual sale a the area church. My sister plans for one sale a year. It's the time she gets to clean out her house and make a little extra cash. She centers her sale around the opening of the "Big Church" sale in her town. Her sale is about 1/2 mile away from "the big one" but with so many bargain hunters in the area, her green fringe signs really draw in the crowds!

She only hosts a sale for one day starting with the early birds at 7am and finishes at about 2pm. Her goal is to keep this as easy an adventure as possible. This short time frame with low prices really moves her items!

Another secret are all those orange price signs. The orange helps to create the "bargain" atmosphere to get people to buy!

BTW: just because you're piggy backing, doesn't mean you don't advertise -- use Craigslist, it's awesome! One tip... the reason she uses the green fringe is to keep from publishing her street address... she just says "follow the green fringe signs" - IT WORKS!

TIP #2: DON'T PRICE IT

Dollar Table

Don't price your items? What the heck...??? You've probably always heard that successful garage sales involve putting stickers on everything. We disagree. My sister puts out tables and throws stuff on in the morning and waits for the bargain hunters to go crazy! She has a dollar table... everything on it is a dollar -- why waste time pricing things at a dollar? Just throw them on the table... how about a quarter table? That's a great one! People start filling their basket with a bunch of items, soon they've got $3.00 worth of stuff that they normally would have haggled over!

TIP #3: Catchy items by the road

You've got to draw the crowds into the sale. When they see other people at your sale, they will flock just to get your bargains! It's amazing what a mirror up by the road, or a tall ladder will do... that bike won't be around long once the bargain hunters get a glimpse from the road. It's exciting, it's fun, it's the thrill of the hunt (for bargains)!

Tip #4: Donate to Charity

You just spent a bunch of time cleaning closets... don't bring the stuff back in the house! Obviously you don't want the items. Our recommendation is to give them to charity. They're outside, just pack in boxes, and put by the road. Schedule the pick up with the charity and away they go. If you can't wait for a pick up, then put in the car and make the trip to the drop off point! But again, if you spent the time to put out for sale, don't bring it back in the house, give to a good cause.

The ladder is a great example, last year it didn't sell... and spent 12 months in the garage taking up space just waiting for this year's sale! It's your choice!
