Backyard Bird Feeder Tips
Feeding birds can be an enjoyable, educational and entertaining year-round hobby. Depending upon the seed mix you choose and the types of birds that live in your area, bird feeding can be inexpensive and rewarding.
If you plan establish a new bird feeder, put it where birds can find it! Birds find new feeders by sight. Once one bird finds your bird feeder, other birds will take notice. A new feeder can be scary and it may take a week or more for birds to work up the courage to check it out. Once your feeder becomes active, observe it for a few weeks to gauge how often you will need to refill your feeder.
The location of your bird feeder is important. On the one hand, an open area can minimize incursions by squirrels. On the other hand, feeders in open areas make visiting birds vulnerable to attacks by flying predators like falcons, hawks and eagles. Keep this danger in mind when you're trying to find a location for your feeder.

- We have bird feeders all over our yard. I have one outside each of my office windows and am fortunate to be able to enjoy these winged friends all year long. Lensolling to my Bird Photographs lens ... and thinking I might need a new hummer feeder this year.

- I love bird feeders, and have 2 simple ones. Alas, this house & my previous house are situated where I can only stand at the kitchen window and look way out in the yard to see the birds and feeders. No comfy chair by a big picture window to watch them and sip coffee. But, less mess close to the house, too!

- What you could do is get a window mounted feeder. Then you could watch them as you have your coffee. I don't think there would be much mess, they tend to eat all the seeds, especially if you let the feeder go empty before filling it again. I think one of the humming bird feeders that suction to the window would be great, assuming there are humming birds around.

- Yes, I put one in my front yard on top of a stump that I left about 5 1/2 feet high for that purpose. Now I'm tempted to remove the stump and plant a blueberry bush. I'd put the bird feeder somewhere else then.

- A horse farm would be great. I don't know if you have hummingbirds, but a hummingbird feeder would be great close to the deck. I am always fascinated by them and there is such a great variety.
