The artist created this exquisite ironwork garden gate by weaving the scrolling bars through the vertical bars.

Charlie is a master of many artistic disciplines, but more recently he has been focusing on working with Iron, Hammer and Flame. Needless to say, he is a very talented Blacksmith.

Darrell Markewitz creates whimsical metal garden gates. The steel or iron is hand-forged and combined with hand-formed copper and brass, creating pieces that blend historic form, materials and techniques.

Garden gates not only contain the perimeters of our property, but can create a focal point, an artistic approach to the awaiting garden.

Garden gates draw you into the garden.

Sometimes a gate can obscure the view, and this can create intrigue and anticipation of what awaits behind the gate. The 'Secret Garden' Cottage Garden Gate does this.

Other gate designs may block the view to some degree, but still offer the viewer somewhat of an outlook into the garden. This too creates interest.

This arching garden gate is part of a walled garden and it certainly falls under my classification of Unusual Gates, although you would find more of these type of gates over in Europe. It reminds me of the garden gate in the book 'The Secret Garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Young Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her Uncle Archibald Craven, after her parents died from Cholera.

Mary is very lonely and is told to go outside and play. Mary isn't very agreeable at the start of the book, but the fresh air seems to make her nicer. She roams the gardens, because there really isn't anything else to do. As Mary wanders round the windy gardens she experiences a special magic. She found a robin and followed the robin. The robin took her to the Secret Garden.

In the garden there is this door which had been locked. The story goes that Mr. Craven had the garden shut in when his wife died and he wouldn't let anyone go inside. It had been his wife's garden. He locked the garden door and had dug a hole and buried the key somewhere.

She meets her cousin Colin Craven, and Dickon Sowerby and together they find the key that opens the garden gate to the secret garden. While the garden, once apparently beautiful, is now neglected, but they decide to bring the garden back to life. As the three transform the garden; it transforms them. The garden teaches them the power of will, nature and love.

This beautiful arbor gate explores the use of natural wood stains and paint. I really like the spring green paint on the gate especially since it echoes the vine leaf color. For a more formal look the same darker stain as the arbor could be used, which might be my preference. But for a cottage garden I like it just as it is!

I like the substantial posts on either side of the gate and the curving pattern in the gate itself. Note the design on the posts mirror the designs on the front porch posts. I would imagine they will paint the gate and fence the same color as the posts and fencing on the front porch. Beautiful Garden Gate for the front yard.

Sun and Cloud Garden Gate or Driveway Gate by One Sun Metalwerks:

This garden gate features Sun and Clouds and uses a combination of Cedar and Rusted or bronzed Metal (photo says Steel) and I classify this under Unique and Unusual Gates. What I enjoy is the transitioning from the all metal gate, to metal over the wood fence, to just wood fence.

This concept of what looks to be a driveway gate could be used as an entrance to a patio area also.

Sunflower Garden Gate with Trellis Picket Fence also by One Sun Metalwerks

This whimsical garden gate features large Sunflowers and Sunflower Leaves made out of rusted metal. The Sunflower Garden Gate has incorporated a Trellis Picket Fence, which I would imagine would do double duty for growing vining vegetables and fruits.

What started out as a seemingly small project of getting rid of the two bougainvillea bushes and replacing the gate and fence, became one project after another. The end result is a relaxing courtyard. Garden Gates Before and After Makeover ...

This artisan crafted wrought iron gate and fence is unique with Corncob Finials and Sunflowers. It is a locked gate with a doorbell on the left post. Wrought Iron Garden Gates are the most expensive gates, but well worth the price and they last practically forever. A great example of garden gates located in New Orleans.
