The Garden Gnome

May I introduce: Der Gartenzwerg. Ahm, what? Sorry, the Garden Gnome. However, an english translation is not necessary, because this little figure, which stands in many gardens all over the world, is so typical German, like Sauerkraut or Cuckoo-Clocks, that you must say: It Is a German.

Date of Birth

The beginnings are ... not in Germany. Fair Play, but never mind. I suppose, riding for the first time on a horse did not happen in the Wild West either....
So, let´s go back to the 18th century. In Vienna, Austria (= Wien, Österreich), first gnome figures were produced for baroque gardens. But the huge popularity grew in Germany, where some decades later the production of garden gnomes started. From here it spread all over the world.

What is it - der Gartenzwerg?

OK. Some say, it stands for narrow-minded people. German Gemütlichkeit, my sweet little home.
THEY ARE WRONG! It is ironic, it is humour, and, most of all, it is a trend.
And they are countless! Garden gnomes making love, garden gnomes committing suicide, garden gnomes guarding your terace, garden gnomes p.... ing in your little garden pond, garden gnomes Japanese Style, garden gnomes on the Moon...... Watch out, der Gartenzwerg is everywhere!
Would make a funny present, too....
