National Gardens Scheme in England and Wales

Every year the gardens across England and Wales in the National Garden Scheme (NGS) welcome over half a million visitors.

The National Gardens Scheme also raises £2 million each year for nursing, caring and gardening charities. Since 1927 NGS has raised over £40 million (£22 million in the last 10 years). Most of the money goes straight to the charities the NGS supports.

Most of the 3,600 gardens are privately owned. Some open as part of a group which gets the whole community involved. But all the gardens are enjoyed by the garden owners and their visitors, funding charities to help people who are ill or under stress.

This is a great guide for planning visits to see gardens in other countries.

And even if you never get to some of the countries it's great just finding about the gardens and reading them about them. I always try and see if it's possible to pay a virtual visit!

Among the many gardens pictured and described in this beautiful volume are-

# In the United States and Canada: Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Boscobel in New York's Hudson Valley, Williamsburg Gardens in Virginia, Magnolia Plantation and its Gardens near Charleston, South Carolina, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin in Wisconsin, the Toronto Botanical Garden, Pacific Undersea Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia, and many more. . .
# In England: The Japanese Garden in London's Holland Park, the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, Shakespeare's Garden in Stratford, and many more. . .
# In France: The Gardens of Versailles outside Paris, the Garden of Claude Monet at Giverney, Chateau de Vauville in Cherbourg, and many more. . .
# The rest of the world: Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy, Potsdam Gardens near Berlin, Germany, the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, Japan, and hundreds more.

In addition to photos and a textual description, each entry cites special features such as fountains and architecture, the garden's size in acres, and the names of the garden's designers. The garden descriptions are organized geographically by country. More than 800 breathtaking color photos and illustrations.

Travels with a Sketchbook in......

When I travel, I sketch. When I sketch on my travels I record it here. Plus information about the history and facilities of places I visit and lots of related links for those who want to know more

I have two great passions - sketching and gardens - and I sketch gardens a lot. See posts on my sketching blog about sketching gardens in general and Kew Gardens in particular
