Creating My Garden Journal

We started keeping a Garden Journal last year and it really have proven to be both an interesting and informative experience and we have been able to learn a great deal in the process.

Imagine the pleasure that keeping a Garden Journal is going to bring you both now and in the years to come. Keeping one is going to enable you to track and learn from your gardening activities.

When you are all caught up in the excitement of planning a new garden, or coming across a new plant at the store or garden center, you don't remember to take the time to create a record of your gardening activities.

While it's not essential that you keep a record of your garden activities, it can really help to keep track of how your plants are doing, things you have tried in the garden that have worked and indeed those that haven't!

That's where a garden journal comes in as well as giving you the joy of revisiting your garden's story at any time.

The Benefits of Keeping A Garden Journal

Garden JournalKeeping a Garden Journal is a great way to learn from past experiences.

It is also a good way to keep track of various plants, trees or bushes you have. You can use one to keep notes about common diseases garden and plant pests, watering and soil requirements and a lot more besides!

You can use a Garden Journal for a lot more than simple record keeping and garden maintenance though. Over time it can become a fantastic scrapbook or historical reord of your personal adventures in the garden.

When you buy a new plant for the garden you can take a picture of it and add it to your garden journal. Then you can add information which will help you in the future when you can't quite remember what the plant's name is.

So add a record of the latin and common names in your journal. Make a note of what the requirements for the soil, sunlight and water are. If you are able to discover more information perhaps about diseases and any pests you need to be aware of then put that into your garden journal too.

How To Maintain A Garden Journal

Once you have set it up then you need to ensure that you make regular updates to your Garden Journal. How often you do this is really going to depend very much on you, however once a month is probably the minimum you want to aim for.

You want to take a new picture of any plant you have included in your journal every month or two. You should make additional notes about how the plant is doing. If you prune it, then you will want to take a before and after pictures and make a note of how well it responds to trimming.

Your Garden journal can also be used to sketch out new ideas for garden bed designs, or to keep pictures of other gardens and plants you like. You could also clip pictures from magazines, or add pictures taken whilst on vacation or visiting someone else's garden.

Imagine the pleasure your garden journal is going to bring you in the winter time. If you live in an area which gets cold, wet and miserable during the winter months, then you can grab your garden journal and look at your ideas and plans for your garden. You can review how far your plants and flowers have come since the beginning and think about your plans for the year ahead!

Great idea! I'm always losing track of what I planted where! This way I can look back to see how I cared for a plant/tree/flower in previous years and what worked and what didn't!

When we moved into a house with a garden, the first garden I'd ever had of my own, I started a garden journal and found it useful and interesting to read. Since then, I always advise new gardeners to keep one. It's so easy to forget things you did that worked and those that didn't.

Great lens! I'm not good at writing journals but I do like to do a casual journal through photo a day. My 2010 photo a day has been useful for reference this year.
