Garden Potting Bench ~ Make Potting Easy

When it comes time for Spring and to get seeds started or seedlings replanted it always makes me ask the question. Am I going to get a potting bench this year.

I ask myself this question every year. In the beginning, I said no. I couldn't justify the expense when I really only dabbled in gardening.

Then I started thinking hmmm. It would be really cool to have and I could do more planting from seed much easier.

Now I'm at the point where I plant a pretty good sized garden every year. I also use starter plants to get the garden started. I just don't have any good place to get the seeds started and keep everything organized.

This is getting more and more expensive, as the garden gets bigger and random freak ice storms in April. :) This is the year I think I will get my potting bench, but now I have to figure out which one!

Potting Bench ~ Which Kind Is Best?

Now comes some decisions. When choosing a potting bench you have to figure out where you're going to keep it, and what material you want it to be made of.

If you are going to have an outdoor potting bench it would be smart to go with Cedar, vinyl or recycled plastic. These are the sturdiest materials, that will be able to stand the test of weather, no matter where you live.

If you are going to keep your potting bench inside you can choose from other materials such as fir, pine, or even metal. Since your potting bench won't be in the elements you have a wider array of choices.

I do love those cedar potting benches though.

Cedar Potting Benches

These have to be my favorite type of potting benches. I love the cedar! They happen to be pretty expensive, but they will last forever!

Here's some cool things about Cedar.

Cedar wood is lightweight and resistant to both cracking and moisture rot.

The oils of this resilient wood guard against insect attack and decay, and their distinctive aroma acts as a mild insect repellant.

Cedar is a dependable choice for outdoor furniture, either as a finished or unfinished wood. Over time, unfinished cedar left outdoors will weather to a silvery gray patina. This natural process does not compromise the strength or integrity of the wood.

Another great aspect of cedar is its environmental effect - which is minimal. A renewable resource, cedar wood emits low greenhouse gases.

Cedar also has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties within the wood. This is great if you have an outdoor potting bench. You won't find mold ever growing on it!

Potting Benches from Recycled Materials

In this day and age it's always a good thing when you can manage to use recycled materials for something new. Potting benches are no different.

There are many places now that are selling potting benches made from recycled plastic. There are some definite benefits of using plastic for your potting bench.

1. It will be impervious to the weather.

2. It will be easy to clean with a simple spray of the hose.

3. It will last a long time, and will not warp, peel or bend.

As you can see, it all really depends on what you like and what you want, but a potting bench from recycled materials they are definitely available and make a good choice.

    Hi Jackie,

Great lens! I love anything to do with gardening, planting, playing in the dirt.
I never thought of a potting bench. Since I am doing more of my own seedlings
it would come in handy. It would look very nice beside my greenhouse. I am going
to send this page towards my husband as a gesture for Mother's Day!
Keep up with the great ideas.
