Using Garden Statues in Your Landscape

Garden Statues come in all sizes and shapes and have been used in many settings. Sometimes like this birdbath, they get used for things other than originally intended. I have decided to share a few that I have used in my own garden. If you have a favorite statue, feel free to share about it in the guestbook. It's always fun to find out how other gardeners have used Garden Statues to accent their landscape.

Using A Garden Statue For a Focal Point

OK, so technically a fountain isn't a statue but many times you can buy them at the same place. My fountain forms the focal point for my front courtyard and the the backdrop for other small statues so I'm going to count it. I have included a bench near my front door that is wonderful for putting packages on as I unlock the door or for simply sitting and enjoying the water on a hot day. After all, one of the benefits of gardening is the feeling of satisfaction you get in enjoying a job well done and that is what the fountain brings to me.

Adding a statue to your garden is like putting words to music.

Sidewalk Garden Statue

If you use the word 'statue' in a broad sense, it can mean both the smaller statuettes as well as huge statues or sculptures. I tend to use it loosely referring to forms that have been cast and are being used in the garden landscape.

Some of the ones I use are small but have a big impact. It's fun to tuck a small figure into a quiet nook and watch when children discover it. I have two little turtles by the sidewalk to my front door along with some assorted frogs and a bird. My grandson has discovered them and regularly checks to see that no one has disturbed them. It makes it fun to walk with him as he checks on his friends. Just an added benefit of adding some small statues to your garden plan.

A Dual Purpose Garden Statue

It was an unintended benefit.

A few years back, my family gave me the gift of a birdbath for my backyard. That in itself wasn't so extraordinary but the one they picked out had two swans sculpted into the base. It make for a pretty lawn focal point. At that time, we had a cat that took to jumping up onto the birdbath to drink and he knocked the top off of its base and chipped it making it useless to hold water. If it had been just a birdbath, I might have gotten rid of it but the swans gave it a dual purpose so it is still gracing my yard long after the cat has moved on.
