Our Garden 2010
Beautiful day here today with a high of 82! We took advantage of Steve's day off and the great weather to get the garden pretty much done.
We wanted to make it a raised garden. Steve put the boards up this past Sunday. It's 12 x 12 feet.
I think, for true raised the dirt should have been up to the top of the boards, but there was only so much money at the moment.
He started by rototilling what dirt was already there. Then, he jumped in the Miracle Grow dirt and raked it down.
Let the planting begin....we planted:
strawberries
snap peas
green onions
chives
spinach
zuchinni
lettuce
corn and
tomatoes
We still have to buy a variety of pepper plants, but we put the cages in for them. We also have basil to plant, but will do that in planters since we ran out of room.
We are no garden experts, but we have been doing some studying. We sure don't intend to let the tomatoes go to waste like we did last year on many. We had such an abundance, that even giving them away we let a lot go to waste.
I will update this lens as the season progresses and so does our garden.

Cost Breakdown
Seeds: $14.98
Soil: $38.37
More soil, some cages, tomato plants: $89.22
6 Bell Pepper plants $12.78
2 more bags of soil $11.58
ornamental pepper, parsley, chocolate mint, and spearmint plants $14.98
Total: $270.07 (I'm sure glad that next year we won't have a lot of this expense!)
I will update this total as we go along.
Seeing this total has me wondering if you do really save money by growing your own. There will also be the water bill, but there is no way to figure that in since we also have 4 flower beds that will be watered and a swimming pool to fill.
I will do my best as I update this lens to keep track of what we are getting out of the garden and what we would pay for the produce at the store at the time we get it.
I am keeping in mind also the health benefits of having a garden: the vitamin D from the sun while we tend it, the exercise while we tend it, as well as the de-stressing factor as we do something we enjoy.

2012 Updating!!
First off---I just ran across the list where I was keeping track of what we got out of the garden:
Sugar snap peas--we got LOTS of these over and over and none went to waste.
Spinach--we used this in several salads
Lettuce--the equivalent of about one head
corn--equivalent of about 2 cans
strawberries--1 pt.
bell peppers--LOTS and none of these went to waste either
green onions--Loads of these but a lot did end up going to waste.
chives--loads of these. We used it in a lot of cooking but a lot also went to waste
tomatoes--about 8 lbs total. We had to use the wrap them in newspaper trick at the end of the season for about 3 lbs of them.
carrots--a couple of bunches worth.
I had a hard time figuring out just what all of these items were worth but have a figure of only about $50 for the food we used. This was not good. But...on to the rest of the update.
In March 2011 we bought our own home. This really put to waste the money spent on building up the garden at his sister's house. We did pull some of the strawberries and got about a pint total from those plants.
In the fall of 2010 an online friend sent me over wintering onions. I pulled those and planted them in our new yard. We did get several onions but I guess I didn't know well enough about how to plant the tops as no more grew.
I picked up some wild garlic from the freecycle list. We used it several times in our cooking and of course it's popped back up this year.
We bought a couple of tomato plants, a couple of bell pepper plants, green bean seeds, pea seeds, and spinach. We also planted some cantaloupe seeds.
We had such a hard summer with record breaking triple digit temperatures 37 days of the summer. The ground was obviously not good either. We didn't have extra to spend on soil amendment.
I attempted a compost pile with no luck at all. It never did any composting! We put in food such as banana peels, old lettuce, strawberry hulls, egg shells, and much more. We also threw in weeds we pulled, shredded newspapers, etc.
Lessons learned. This year we only plan on having 2 tomato plants and 2 bell pepper plants and we have 2 very large planters that came with the house that we are going to put those in. There is already potting soil in those pots. Wish us luck.
Please, if you have any lenses that give advice on gardening, link them up below!

- We bought our own home, and yes, attempted to garden. The ground wasn't good and we had record breaking days in triple digits that I'm sure didn't help. All we got was one tomato, a few onions, very few peas and some spinach. The strawberries did well at first then completely died away, which isn't like strawberries at all. I still need to update this lens with totals from that year, but in the move lost my little notepad where I was keeping notes.

- Next year will be easier and cheaper. I want to build an additional bed next year but for this year I just converted one of my flower beds. My total cost so far is just $32.50. I don't have a wide variety, but focused on what I new we wanted a lot of..tomatoes, peppers, and beans. I love to dig in the dirt and am looking forward to canning and drying tomatoes.
You have a great garden so far.
Good luck!
