A Selection of Cutlivators to Fit Any Garden

One definition of a cultivator is: a person who nurtures. Another definition is: a tool or machine used to loosen the soil. Both of the definitions play a huge part in growing a successful garden. You can have all the tools in the world, but they will not run themselves. You are the cultivator above and beyond anything else. You are the one tool that is really necessary.

The other cultivators discussed in this lens, are tools to help you along the way. The soil is the base to any garden. Whether, it is a flower garden, a container garden, raised bed garden, or just a good old fashioned in the ground garden. The soil must be made loose so the roots of the plant can spread and grow. Throughout the years there have been many kinds of cultivators used to do this job.

This lens will cover some of the more practical ones for the average weekend gardener. Regardless of the tools, the desire to see the fruits of your labor grow will be the biggest asset you can have.

Loosening The Soil

The whole purpose of a cultivator is to break up and loosen the soil. By loosing the soil, your plants will able to spread it's roots and grow to it's full potential. Many of the plants you buy today have been growing in a container so long, that they are almost root bound. This includes bedding plants purchased at your local retailer.

The best way to describe planting in unloosened soil is; that's it would be like you putting on a shoe that was too small and having to wear them everyday, all day long. Your feet would be cramped and trying to bust out of them. The same goes with the roots of your plants. When they are cramped up and unable to spread to get the nutrients they need, the plant will wither and die.

Keeping You Soil Loose

You can help reduce the compaction of your soil by amendmending it with other matreial. The adddition of organic matter can greatly improve your soil and reduce the frequnecy of loosing the dirt.

Remember that most plants like well drained soil. So, if you have clay type soil you will need to add quite a bit of organic material, and even non organic material. Never underestimate the power of good old sand . Sand can be a much needed amendment to the soil. Drainage is essentail, and sand mixed with other organic material can greatly improve drainage and lessen compaction.

Much of the organic material you can purchase locally is composted manure or some from there of. It can be sticky and will compact to a brick like state if you are not careful.
