Gardens are Proven To Lower Stress Levels

There's more to a garden than what and when to plant. Whether you love tending veggies or caring for your lawn, gardening works off stress and brings peace to our hectic lifestyles. The way our economic system is looking, we all need to destress and if you plan it right, you can put a few veggies on your table as well. This lens is my effort to encourage others to develop the green spaces around them as places to relax and lower their stress.

My Love of Gardening Started Early.

It was caught not taught

My father instilled a love for gardening in me. He always had vegetables for our table along with roses, lilacs, grapes, peonies, bulbs of all kinds, etc. Being one of six children, we had a broad lawn to play on surrounded by gardens. Because our yard always had something blooming, it wouldn't feel like home without it.

To be sure, we faced some very different challenges. In Upstate New York, Dad started plants inside to extend their growing season. I remember the last of the tomatoes ripening on newspaper in the basement before they were lost to the frost.

Here in Florida, I have early and late growing seasons separated by a hot, wet, muggy one in the middle. We go from abundant rain to drought and if you aren't watching, your plants suddenly dry out. Because of our shade, I can't have much of a vegetable garden here and have turned my attention to landscaping.

My fountain is easy to maintain.

My New Fountain

How I Take Care Of It.

When I was little we took a vacation trip to a place in South Carolina called Brookgreen Gardens. I will never forget wandering through the gardens and finding huge sculptures tucked here and there waiting to be discovered. Since most of them were much larger than I was, it was something I never forgot.

Obviously my little cement turtles and frogs can't hope to compete but I like to think the faint echoes of all that magnificence finds a home in my garden fountain. I really hadn't planned on buying it but when we bought our house, it's semi-shady courtyard seemed perfect for one. Wondering what I was getting myself into, my husband and I found one at our local building supply. It was a little irregular so with it's discount, we were able to stretch the budget to cover it.

My fountain is self contained. If yours is one that has a generous water reservoir in it's base, It would be a little different. If I run mine all day, I have to fill it up about three times.

As for the cleaning, about once a week I take a piece of hose and siphon any dirt out of the bottom of it. If we have had a lot of storms, I might splash all of the water out and replace it. Otherwise, I occasionally add a little bleach to keep the water clean. The only other thing I do is pull out any leaves or blossoms that have blown into it. That's it! It only takes about 10 minutes from start to finish!

What's a Fountain Without A Bench to Sit On?

Once the fountain was set up, I had to add the bench. Actually it was one I kept on a previous front porch. I sanded and refinished it so that it could stand up to our Florida weather. Three years later it is still going strong.

That bench is a wonderful place to put groceries while I unlock the front door. When my grandson was tiny, sitting on the bench while the fountain ran was sure to calm him. I wonder if that began his love for the outdoors because he sure misses it when he can't go out. There have been times I have gone out to sit, just to refresh my soul while the water splashed away my tension. Best of all are the times I rest there hot and sweaty from gardening. It's the best place to drink a little ice tea and cool off.

Add A Bottle Tree To Your Garden Decor

I love finding something different!

When you find something for your garden that is unique, it makes your garden a local landmark. You can be sure passersby notice. That is why I am so excited about bottle trees. I've never seen them in a store which means you might be the first one on your block to have one. How cool is that?

They are made in a family owned welding shop in a small-town right here in the U.S called Sunflower, MS. It's in the heart of the South, the Mississippi Delta. As you know, when you buy something that's made in the U.S.A. it's good for the American economy. Also, because they aren't a big operation, you can have something that is truly unique bringing attention to your favorite spot.

If you visit the Bottle Tree site, come back and leave a comment. I really wonder have you ever seen these before?
