Garden for Peace

What if every single one of us with even just a little bit of land planted a garden of vegetables, herbs and flowers this summer? What if churches, community centers and schools joined in? What if instead of expensive landscaping, large companies planted gardens and donated the produce to local food programs? (Hiring the same people to tend the veggies as are now tending the landscaping so that people would not be put out of work.) Could we make a difference in the carbon footprints we are stomping all over our planet? Could we reduce our heavy dependence on oil and our gasoline consumption? Could we help feed a hungry planet and thereby bring peace to our world?

What if we sent seeds instead of guns to hungry people and insured they could build irrigation systems as well?

What if? Could we make a difference? I believe that we could. In fact, I believe that we can--and many people are doing so.

Gardening isn't just a summertime activity. Vegetables can be grown into the fall and herbs as well. There are even ways to grow food all year round, even if you live in a cold winter climate. So take a look at your seed catalogs again and dream of the fall and winter garden.

The French Intensive Method--Sustainable Gardening for a Bountiful Harvest

The French Intensive Method is a system of using planter boxes or raised beds and organic gardening methods to raise vegetables, herbs and flowers without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Everything which is not brought inside for use at the table is composted and returned to the land that gave it forth. Scraps from inside are also composted and seeds are saved over from year to year to grow again. Nitrogen fixing crops such as peas and rye are grown over the winter to prepare the soil for the summer crops. Plants that deter pests are planted around the periphery of the garden to keep the plants healthy and bug free. This is essentially farming as it was done prior to the industrial revolution and around the world shipping. It is a bountiful form of gardening for an abundant and natural life. It is inexpensive, humble and mindful. Many of the books in the Amazon links below explain these concepts further and give directions for developing a natural, intensive garden.

Roses and Rose Traditions
I love roses. I am not picky about the culitvar, the color or the size. I am especially in love with fragrant roses, but even if they have no fragrance I will welcome them and probably take a picture! Each rose seems to have a personality unique unto its self. Even faded roses are still beautiful. T
Making and Using Potpourri
Twenty years ago I made potpourri and related crafts and sold them at local fairs. I never got beyond the 'I'm having so much fun, I don't know how much money I'm losing' phase, but I did learn a great deal about potpourri. It is decorative and the scents are calming and soothing. The crafts range f
Language of Flowers
A rose is a rose is supposedly a rose and according to Shakespeare would by any other name smell as sweet. Whether those suppositions are true or not, the rose has signified love in the language of flowers for a very long time. Similarly, the pansy has signified, 'thoughts of you' and friendship. Ou

Fair Trade for All
We all love a bargain that's for sure! Just look at the popularity of sales and especially of garage and yard sales. But have you ever thought about what happens to the economy if every buyer makes every purchase a sale purchase? It contracts. It contributes to recession and to a lack of prosperity
The Meaning of Herbs
Herbs, like flowers, have meanings attached to them, as well as specific uses. You can make an herbal bouquet for someone you love, and the recipient can dry the bouquet to use later for cooking or herbal tea. Just make sure the herbs are edible, grown without pesticides and that you include a card
