Fragrant Gardenias
Buying a Gardenia Plant
The gardenia plant should be eight to ten inches high when purchased. It should be bushy and loaded with buds. The leaves should be dark green and healthy (no spots). The gardenia will grow for many years with the right care. It's best to purchase a gardenia in the Spring.
Gardenia Flowering and Fragrance:
The Gardenia flower is pure white at first, and later turns to ivory before finally withering. The Gardenia can flower off and on all year long, but the main season is May through September. The creamy white flowers have a strong fragrance and are reminiscent of jasmine. The Gardenia is native to the tropical and subtropical areas of the world, and it can grow to a height of over 6 feet in ideal conditions. The leaves are dark green and waxy if the growing conditions are right. The Gardenia has long been considered to be the ideal flower for a men's tuxedo button-hole or for a woman's bridal boquet.
Gardenia Light and Temperature:
The temperature should never go under 65F unless the Gardenia must bloom at a special time like, Christmas. Then place it in a bright, warm spot in August. When the flower buds have appeared, move it to a cooler position (maximum 65F) until it has bloomed out.
Gardenia Size and Growth Rate:
The Gardenia can grow typically to three feet tall with ideal conditions. It normally grows to about 16-20 inches with an annual growth of 4 to 6 inches.

Gardenia Plants
Gardenia Plant Care

The Gardenia needs high humidity and should be misted frequently. Keep the soil evenly moist, using rainwater or boiled water that is cooled to room temperature. The water should never be cold. Feed the plants every three weeks during the growing season with a rhododendron-azalea food, or acidifying fertilizer. (Miracid)
Soil and Transplanting for Gardenia:
Gardenias need to be re-potted every other year in early spring. Use a soil mixture of equal parts of peat, sand and humus.
Grooming the Gardenia Plant:
If your gardenia plant has become leggy, it should be trimmed back in March - April. Use this opportunity to take cuttings. The cuttings should be about five inches long. Plant them in a soil mixture of equal parts of sand and peat, and keep them at a temperature of about 75F. It will take the cuttings four to six weeks to strike roots, and they can then be moved to spot with a lower temperature (about 65F). Once the cuttings have grown to a reasonable size, they can be moved to individual pots using the same soil mixture.

Keeping Your Gardenia Happy
As long as your gardenia is kept in the right conditions, it is fairly resistant to attacks by insects or diseases. Listed are a few problems that can incur and how to rectify them.
Aphids can be a problem in the summer with gardenias. Treat with insecticide.
Spider mites may attack Gardenias from time to time. Combat this as quickly as possible with an approved product.
Yellow or falling leaves may be the result of too little water, of the water being too alkaline. It could also be chlorosis, a trace element deficincy. Apply chelated iron to correct this.
Happy Environment for Gardenia:
Like all plants, gardenias need the proper conditions and locations to thrive well. If growing indoors, move the Gardenia plant around your home according to the time of year, so that it always has the optimal light and temperature conditions.

- Make sure the soil you plant your Gardenias in is very well conditioned. Mix peat moss and compost material into the soil to hold moisture. The soil needs to be moist at all times, but be careful not to drown the roots. You should also cover the soil with a material like wood chips, to make sure the soil maintains its moisture throughout the day. Maintain the pH of the soil around 5 or 6. Feed the Gardenia every 3 weeks with a rhododendron-azalea food. To treat the black spot, use soapy water in a spray bottle.

- I love my Gardenia, however, it gets black mildew(?) ALL over its lower leaves.New leaves come out nice and green and shineythen get the black stuff later.. The plant produces many nice blossoms in late April/early May. I am in near north Florida, south of St. Augustine, North of Daytona Beach about a mile from the ocean on a saltwater canal. The shrub is now about 4 1/2 feet tall and is on the south side of my house, next to the house. 20 ft. from the water. There is a sprinkler system. I have removed the lower branches and picked off the twiggy parts, removed much of the lower foliage...thinking that there needs to be more air circulation..what have I done? What can I spray/treat this gardenia to prevent the ugly black stuff???
