Every gardener needs good gardening tools and gardening supplies and as spring is just around the corner and now is the time that most outdoor enthusiasts are dreaming about digging in the dirt, when to plant a garden, planting seeds, watching their plants grow, and the eventual harvest. If you have someone on your gift list who is an expert gardener or just does it as a hobby, this lens will feature some great garden supplies for gardeners that they are sure to enjoy.

The Vegetable Gardener's Bible

I love ths gardening book!

Written by Edward C. Smith, this book highlights Ed's system called W-O-R-D that stands for:

Wide rows
Organic gardening methods
Raised bed gardening
Deep soil

Topics discussed in this book are composting, organic pest control (with some home made recipes), seeds, tools, and harvesting. There are also a lot of colorful photos and a section on vegetable profiles from A to Z. These profiles give the gardener information on what each vegetable needs such as where to plant, when to plant, what type of soil is needed, how much water each plant needs, and much more.

I own this book and refer to it often throughout the year and highly recommend it to anyone who either has a garden or is thinking about planting one.

Protect your hands while working in your vegetable gardens

Garden Gloves Are Great Gifts

Some gardeners do not wear gloves when planting a garden because they like to feel the earth on their bare hands and fingers. But most gardeners do wear them to keep their hands clean and protected from injury. Even those who prefer to work with their garden plants with their bare fingers, keep gloves on hand (no pun intended), for "just in case."

Great Garden Companions

Companion planting and plant families

Another book that would make a wonderful gift for a gardener is Great Garden Companions. This book, by Sally Jean Cunningham, which plants grow well with others to maximize plant health and how you can mix vegetables, herbs, and flowers for a natural pest control as well as adding beauty to the garden. Also included is a glossary that details each vegetable's family unit, friends, growing basics, and problems & solutions. Its a "must have" companion planting book for any gardeners library.

This is another book of which I own a copy and find it very helpful. It is well written and easy to understand. A great help when it comes to planting herbs and garden flowers as deterrants to pests or just add some beautiful color to your garden. Its my "must have" reference manual.

Gardening Tools As Gifts

A few things gardeners can never have too many off are garden tools. Trowels, weeders, rakes, and a tote to carry them in is essential. Its always nice to have some extra garden supplies on hand. If you have children who like to help, it makes them feel included and important if they are allowed to use mom or dad's tools.

My favorite garden tool is......

A Great Gift For Any Gardener ~ Pruning Shears

Pruning shears are always needed and every gardener should have a pair, or two, or even three.

Fiskars 9109 Traditional Bypass Pruning Shears

Amazon Price: $5.99 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

These are my favorite gardening tools. We have a big problem with roaming blackberry bushes and these help me keep them clipped so that the kids and I are not getting scratched up when we walk through the path to my sister-in-laws house. Also keeps the bushes manageable so that the berries are easer to get to when they ripen.

Garden Loppers

Garden loppers make great gifts for those trying to clear an area to garden in, or clean brush for yard work in general.

(Note to those who know me, I only have one pair and they're getting old. I have these on my wish list and if anyone gives a duplicate gift, I would not be disappointed. Hint hint).

Let's make dirt!

Composting For The Garden

If you want to have an organic garden and cut back on how much trash goes into your trash can, you should read up on composting and invest in a compost tumbler or make a compost bin. You can add certain kitchen scraps, paper, and other items to your compost bins or tumbler that will eventually break down into healthy, rich soil that you can add to your garden that will add nutrients for your plants. Join the fun and make some dirt!

Green Houses Are Great Gifts For Gardeners

If you are planting a garden from seeds or need somewhere to care for your seedlings before planting them directly to the garden, a small green house is always handy. This is important if the temperatures are a little too cool for the plants to be outside at night or you are transitioning them from a warmer temperature inside the house.

(Another note to my friends, I'm always appreciative of the portable greenhouses. Hint hint).
