Gardening with Grandma

Ranked #6,286 in Home & Garden, #94,683 overall

Children love to dig in the dirt and gardening will teach them many valuable lessons while they do it.

Through the eyes of your grandchildren the birds and bugs in the garden becomes a lesson in biology - when they ask "why" and you take the time to answer. And growing seeds becomes a scientific experiment with the details they will learn according to their age. Come Play in Our Garden

Do you have space for a veggie garden? Visualize your own veggie patch, providing you with some, or most, of your fruit and veggie needs. This might save you between $30 and perhaps $100 per week. That could mean an extra $5000 in your pocket each and every year.

You can plant 'things we can eat' and 'flowers we can pick'. Cherry tomatoes grow well in pots and produce lots of little tomatoes that are fun watch them grow and ripen ready to pick and eat.

Flowers that are easy to grow are pansies - they bloom profusely and love to be picked! Another thing I like about pansies is that they press well and therefore can be used for many crafts. How cool is that? Using flowers you grew in your own garden with Grandma!

A Bee's Eye View of a Daylily

Stamens of a daylily (Hemerocallis), thickly covered in pollen

Honey bees visit as many as 1,000 flowers a day. They use their long tongues to sip nectar from the flowers. They store this nectar in their honey stomachs. The honey stomach is a special organ that breaks down the sugar in the nectar. When the bees return to the hive, they spit up the nectar. They give some of the nectar to other bees. The rest, they put into empty cells. That is where the nectar turns into sweet honey.

When a honey bee buzzes from flower to flower, it collects more than just nectar. Pollen sticks to its hairy body and hind legs. The bee brushes this pollen into "baskets," or sacs, on its hind legs. Later, when the bee returns to the hive, it kicks off the pollen into cells in the hive. Honey bees use this pollen as food.

How to meet the challenge of getting kids into gardening.

Getting Kids into Gardening
Meeting the challenge of getting kids into gardening.

Autumn Gardening is a very important season.

Fall is still a very important season in the garden. Cooler temperatures make garden chores easier on you and your plants. Fall is a great time to plant, prune and clean-up the garden.
Short season gardens need to be put to bed. Warmer zones are starting a whole new growing season.
A little effort in the garden during fall can make your garden ready to go next spring.
