We don't want to hurt these creatures of nature, we just want them to get out of the garden!
Getting Rid of Critters in the Garden
Getting the Pests Out Without Taking Them Out
There are just a few ways to get the large critters out of the garden and landscape.
Startle Them
Any wild animal will be likely to take off if there is some sudden movement or loud sound.
Scare Them
Scare them in the sense that they suspect there is a predator in the area. Fox urine or even human urine are examples of this type of repellent. The inflatable owls and snakes fall into this category as well.
Offend Them
This is the basic of repellents like pepper sprays. Pepper is the basis for many pest controls because it's very offensive to some animals (mostly mammals) but others (like birds) are unaffected by it. That's why you often see hot pepper suet sold for use in bird feeders.
Many of the ultrasonic type of electronic repellents also work by simply offending or bothering the pests to the point that they just leave.
