Fort Stevens Inspired artwork

I recently met some wonderful people who share a passion for Civil War Reenactment. I was delighted when they invited me to their wedding at Fort Stevens on the Oregon coast. They invited me to bring my paints and my camera. Unfortunately I couldn't stay the whole weekend but I was able to get some really nice photos and have since worked on some paintings that I'd like to share here.

I thought it serendipity that I started this series just before election times here in the U.S. The title of the series is Please Don't Divide My Country Again. I hope to express the deep sympathy that I know all of us share with the families of that era during our most tragic war on the homeland. Today as I see disagreements constantly in the news, my heart cries out that somehow we must settle our differences and come together again united in this country.

Bugle Call is the first in the series and I think it is pretty self explanatory. Here you have the bugler calling a retreat amidst a band of very distressed soldiers. The greys are seen in the distance conquered. The smoke from the cannons pollutes the air. The damage is done. Who wins in war, really?

A larger image of this painting is found on my website. The 16 X 20 original painting is for sale for $800. For more information please contact me.

Flag Boy

In this little scene I saw a moment of hope. The flag representing union, the child representing hope for the future.

Flag Boyis 14 X 18 and is being offered for $500.

The March

I was excited when I took this photo. The gentlemen in the reenactment were so much in character that I knew this painting would be successful. I wanted an image that would spell out the face of war.

The March is 18 X 24 and is available for $650.

To War

This painting is again about the faces, the young, the inexperienced, soldiers that have been recruited to lead men that are older than themselves. A moment of contemplation is captured here.

About DianneG

Hello world! Welcome to my lens. I'm an artist really trying to reach out to folks with my art. I paint specifically in oil and my forte is portraits although I do a lot of figurative and plein air work as well.

I love the old masters both representational and impressionism and my work is a mix of both. Sometimes I use the grisalle technique and sometimes I paint alla prima. It mostly depends on my subject matter and the mood I am attempting to recreate.

I work from life whenever I can. Friends and I get together and hire models or I paint en plein air, which is painting on site.

I never trace or use a grid as is so popular theses days. I find for myself true art is developing the eye-hand relationship. The skill is, to me, developing the ability to see accurately and then to write what I see on canvas. I guess I come from the old school!

I currently have been visiting Civil War reenactments and am doing a series of Civil War paintings. While some artists boast on historical accuracy, I find myself emphasizing emotional historical accuracy, hoping to express the human feelings acquainted with this country's civil war.

For three years I was the resident artist of Washington State Renaissance Faire, painting 20 minute portraits as my clients pose. My goal is to go on to a more refined career of portrait painting.

I am always looking for venues and galleries to show my work so if you know of any gallery that my work might fit well in, let me know. You can see my website and more of my work at http://gardnersart.com

Thanks for visiting and drop me a line if you will.
