Here's why Garfield cartoons are still running today!
Although Garfield is a cat, the comic strip appeals to cat and dog lovers alike. It's one of my favorite cartoons. Having a house-full of cats, I have known many like him.
Jim Davis, the creator, has created Garfield to have the same foibles that we humans have. He struggles with his weight, eating obsessively. He's lazy and will do most anything to get out of having to move. And he hates, hates, hates Mondays.
I can relate to all of these things. Maybe that's why I love the cartoon strip so much. It reminds me of someone I love -- me. It allows me to laugh at myself while all the while pointing to Garfield as the lazy, fat cat.
Here you'll find fun facts; cartoons; toys; books; videos; the history of Garfield; info about his creator, Jim Davis; his owner, Jon Arbuckle; and his compatriots, Odie, Nemel, Arlene and Pooky.
So take a look, then tell me what you think in my Guest Book.
Garfield - The History
The first Garfield strip was published on June 19, 1978. It is still being produced and is syndicated world-wide in about 2,580 newspapers and journals. In fact, it holds a Guinness World Record for the most widely syndicated comic strip.Garfield merchandise is very popular. According to Wikipedia, Garfield merchandise earns roughly $750 million to $1 billion a year.
There have been feature-length films, a couple of animated TV series, and several CGI animated direct-to-video movies.

Garfield's Creator: Jim Davis
Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945. He grew up on a farm but spent most of his time indoors because he had asthma. He kept himself busy by doodling. He worked in advertising for 2 years; was an assistant to Tom K. Ryan, the creator of Tumbleweeds, where he learned the comic strip business.
His first comic strip, called Gnorm Gnat ran for several years before it was canceled. When looking around for inspiration, he noticed that there were lots of dog characters but no cats. So, he created Garfield and named the character after his Grandfather.
In 1981, Davis formed a licensing company called Paws Incorporated. The company is dedicated to quality control of the Garfield character and merchandise.
David was inducted into the Licensing Industry Merchandiers Association Hall of Fame in 1998. Garfield merchandise is sold in 69 countries.

Some call it laziness. I call it deep thought.
