Gargoyles, grotesques or chimeras?
How are they suppose to be called
Chimeras and grotesques are often mistaken for gargoyles. Technically chimeras and grotesques are not always gargoyles and gargoyles are not always chimeras or grotesques figures (they can be faces of monks and priests as well as animals). The word gargoyle comes from the French word "gargouille", meaning "gullet" and refers to a carving that serve as a waterspout . Gargoyles dates back to ancient Egypt, but are mostly associated to the Middle Ages and its Gothic architecture. The thumbnail photo is courtesy of atoach
So a gargoyle is a waterspout, whatever form it has.
A chimera is a fantastic or mythical figure and a grotesque is a "weird" carved stone figure. Chimeras and grotesques could be a gargoyles or not depending if it has been done to serve as a waterspout..

- I never knew gargoyles started out as fountains. I figured they started out as protectors of building or something. I love looking at them, but they've always scared me.
I like your idea of framing postcards. I think it would look neat!

- Great arrangement of graphics and information. Do the gargoyles on Notre Dam have nicknames? There's some nice /mythological_animals that you might like at Zazzle.

- I am sorry, I was certain to had answer this, but apparently I forgot to press add comment!
From what I know, they are unnamed. The only one that is usually refered to in a different manner is the famous "Stryge" (it means a female winged demon). That's the one holding her chin in both hands, she has horns and wings (You have it on this page, somewhere in the middle)

- I think gargoyles are supposed to be frightening, aren't they? Anyway, there is something about them that I have always been intrigued with.

- There is 3 main theories (at least for the medieval period): the first is that they were made ugly and scary to show that every creature is a creature of God, the other is that they were made to scare people into going to church and the last one is that they were made that way to scare evil beings.
