Giuseppe Garibaldi
Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-82) was an Italian patriot and liberator, who (with his followers called the Red Shirts) rid Italy of the hated Austrian occupation troops and united the many kingdoms of Italy into one unified country.
He had to flee Italy after being involved in a revolt at Genoa, Italy. He took part in several wars of liberation in South America, and then returned to Italy in 1848 where he led a national insurrection. Again he was forced to flee Italy when this insurrection was a failure.
War broke out in Italy against the occupying Austrians. Garibaldi returned to Italy where he successfully conquered Sicily and Naples, which then handed over to King Victor Emanuel who ruled over a newly liberated and unified Italy.
In 1862 and 1867 Garibaldi unsuccessfully tried to capture Italy from the Pope.

I offer neither pay, nor quarters, nor food
"I offer neither pay, nor quarters, nor food; I offer only hunger, thirst, forced marches, battles and death. Let him who loves his country with his heart, and not merely with his lips, follow me."
